I love this book by Tom Kolb. It is 104 pages jam-packed with the most important elements of music theory for guitar, including chord construction, chord progressions, and scale patterns for any key. I would recommend that EVERY guitar player study this book after completing six to twelve months of beginner guitar lessons. Knowing what is in this book can help you become a real musician.This is not an instruction book for the absolute beginner. The beginning student will (I think) require considerably more explanation. However, for any level of guitar player, this would be a great reference to use when taking lessons with a music teacher. If you already play another musical instrument, then go ahead and jump into Tom Kolb's book immediately - - - it will probably be the quickest method to transfer your existing knowledge to guitar.If you are trying to teach yourself, then you will benefit by studying the basics of music theory before you use this book. I recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory, 2nd Edition. After you finish a basic music theory book, then you should have not have any problems following the Tom Kolb Music Theory book.The book is very well organized and the content is presented effectively. While a music staff is consistently used throughout the book, neck diagrams or tab representations are also used to represent notes and chords. There is one great feature of the audio CD: the guitar part is balanced hard-right, so if you adjust the balance entirely to the left the guitar part is eliminated, allowing you to play the guitar part yourself.

I like this book. However, none of the audio files play in my Kindle for PC app, or on my kindle Android app. Both have the following message whenever there is an audio file, " There is audio content at this location that is not currently supported for your kindle device. The caption for this content is displayed below"Anyone have any idea how to correct this so I can play the audio examples?

Anyone having problems getting the audio to play in the kindle app? I tried on my android phone, android tablet and windows pc. All I get is a message that kindle doesn't support the audio. Why publish a book with links to audio files if they can't be played? Disappointed.

It isn't magic...it only feels that way if you put in the work.

I play guitar for almost 40 years and played lead guitar professionally for 15 years. This book is very good and very useful even if you do not know how to read music as everything is shown in guitar-tab format as well. You should know how to read chords like am7 or cmaj7 though.I happen to know more than average about music theory but I found some interesting areas that I did not take in consideration before and it gave me some new ideas and inspirations.I think this book will be very useful for any serious guitar player starting at the a early-advanced level. I would say it should be a "must" for the advanced player who wants to complete his/her knowledge about music theory on the guitar.Something for everyone - and the audio samples are really cool!

Wish I had bought this 2 years ago when I started guitar. But it's an excellent book for explaining music theory too. It's just formatted for guitar players. But the music theory is still music theory. Really great book.

Great book.I would recommend this book for guitarist who have some general idea about music theory. This book explains difficult material in a simple matter. I learned how to memorize the notes on the fretboard with ease and simple tricks to make me a more efficient player. I am not a "professional" but a person who just plays for fun.There are a lot of guitar books out there but this is the real deal. A truthful handbook that shows you how to be a better player by explaining what is important. There are no shortcuts to better playing but there are techinques to make you better and simple tricks that can help tremendously.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who was initiative to get better but doesn't want to pay the high cost for formal lessons.This book is ALL SUBSTANCE - NO FILLER, don't let the 100+ pages fool you. Simply put, the BEST music theory for guitarist book out there. Well worth 10X the $20!!!!

I bought this book way back in 2008 when I first picked up a guitar. It was way,way to advanced for me. Here I am after 7 years of lessons. An alternative is "Idiots Guide to Music Theory For Guitar" which is more than enough for the first few years in my opinion. It teaches basic chord construction and has all the important scales,shapes and modes.But of you really want to understand music theory as it applies to the guitar, get this book. I can now fully understand Kolb's book as I aspire to become an advanced player.

Ya tengo un logo eslogan pero no lo tengo registrado, pero como vivo en Guatemala tendre que investigar como hacerlo aqui, en fin este libro me ayudo a ordenar mis ideas y me deja claro por donde empezar, hare paso a paso lo que dice este libro y le tengo mucha fe a mi proyecto pero solo es muy dificil! Hay que delegar y los recursos recomendados se ven buenisimos! Buscare algun tipo de colaboracion como lo recomienda y no me desesperare, ya he iniciado comprando todo y no dare marcha atras! VALIOSA INFORMACION A MUY BAJO COSTO!

excerpted from my full review:I'm torn over this book. On one hand, any new resource is good. We have a dire need for more views on mental illness, and this writer/husband needed an outlet. It's one of very few books dedicated solely to the loved ones of those living with mental illness. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with illness of a loved one. Lukach has the ability to focus solely on his experience because he doesn't have to deal with the extraneous issues that quickly take over in 99.9% of US cases.Three episodes/hospitalizations in the first five years of being diagnosed with a severe mental illness is not unusual, and the awful trial and error nature of psychopharmacology gets a little sunlight here. This book does best early on, when he's furious, scared and confused at the sometimes arbitrary, often misleading and always rigid rules of psychiatric care. I highlighted huge sections of these early encounters with hospitals and staff because despite the many who feel similarly, in my decades in the field, very little has changed beyond some nicer wording. So I cheered him for this.My discomfort with the book came after that. By the end it seems like he thinks he's got it all worked out. Five years into severe psychiatric illness is a very short time. I don't even know that his lovely wife actually qualifies as severely mentally ill. She is able to hold down a job between her three episodes and *has* a between period. Of course it feels painstaking to all involved, but cancer of any stage feels painstaking, yet there are still stages. Then there's the ability this family has to quit jobs, pay out of pocket - not a single word about most people's biggest nightmare: insurance companies stopping their loved ones from getting the care they need. He need not tell anyone else's story, but his story is mild compared to most.Everyone has a right to tell their story, but this one felt a bit pat in the latter parts, like he has learned what the right things to say are, and he's saying them, but if I had this guy on my therapy couch, I'd be asking some tough questions about his pretty words. He got his feelings out, and that's what I got from this book: his feelings. It's a very one-sided, tiny slice of the beginning of his family's mental health journey. I wish them well, but I can't say I'd recommend this book to many people who want to learn anything more than one lucky family's story.

When I started this story I thought it was going to be about Guilia and her experience going through psychotic breaks and visits to the psych ward. This is more of a memoir of her husband, Mark’s, experience as her dedicated caretaker.Mark seemed to have written this book from his heart and owned up to honest frustrations and emotions that caretakers deal with. Through it all, his love for Guilia is evident. Some of the frustrations were things I experienced myself as a mom – being sick as a dog and crawling on the floor to take care of your kid, the enormous guilt of your kid being the first daycare kid to arrive AND being the last daycare kid to leave… so many examples were things that were “normal” parenting things to me. But the difference for Mark is the reason behind it all is so completely devastating. He struggles to go it alone while also worrying about Guilia’s recovery (will she recover?) and what happens after. I do wish that Mark would have shared more about the fact that he was also receiving psychiatric/therapy care, because its important to recognize there is no shame in reaching out for objective, non-partial help. So much of this book is a testament to regular people making it through devastating mental health issues. I would recommend this book to someone who’s dealing with being a caretaker as a comforting message of “you are not alone”, “someone else has felt similar fears, frustrations, anger and sadness”.This story is a 5 star read because the writing is great, fluent, strong. The story is so personal yet shared with dignity. And because I’m rooting for Guilia’s healthy mental state so that this lovely little family can thrive without the fear of when the next time bomb will go off. I’m really rooting for them.

This book really touched my heart. He stuck by his wife and loved her unconditionally​. Thank you Mark for sharing your story and making people aware that mental illness isn't something you can get over,it is a disease that you have to confront the rest of your life.

Matthew L. Miller is director of science communications for The Nature Conservancy, the world’s largest conservation organization. He is editor and lead writer the popular Cool Green Science blog and is one of the most prolific writers in the organization’s 65-year history. He has traveled across North America and to five continents to cover stories on science, nature and outdoor recreation. He’s worked for the Conservancy for 17 years, previously serving as communications director for the Idaho program. Matt received a degree in English – Creative Writing from Penn State, where he also worked as a publicity writer early in his career. Joichi "Joi" Ito has been recognized for his work as an activist, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and advocate of emergent democracy, privacy, and Internet freedom. Several years ago, I was invited to be an outside set of eyes and ears and voice at the weekly luncheons that were held by the City Science initiative within the Media Lab. The level of creativity and cross-disciplinary innovation (Joi Ito prefers the terms "antidisciplinary") is without equal.Ito and Howe make the point that much of future innovation will take place in the interstitial spaces - in the white space - between recognized academic disciplines. This book offers a robust examination of how we will get to an era when the walls that keep disciples isolated from each other have dissolved. The anticipated changes have tremendous implications for developments in the fields of education, technology, medicine and artificial intelligence.The book is appropriate for academics as well as for lay readers who are intrigued with how we will get to the uncertain future that is dawning faster than we can assimilate the changes.

All of Joi's intelligence and guidance about our "learn, unlearn and relearn" future wrapped up in one book. Guidance from Joi Ito for tech startups and companies employing tech (all of them now) has proven invaluable for the last two decades. This book distills the many lectures, Facebook live chats, blog entries and other wisdom from this man who Business Week once said was one of the 25 most influential people on the Web. Highly recommended.

The points highlighted in this book are all good points, but they are rather easy-to-understand ideas that can be adequately articulated in a blog article. If you are familiar with this type of concepts, there is not a lot of depth here. The key points are: embrace uncertainty, collaborative over individual efforts, adaptability over rigidity, etc.

I had an excited expectation for reading this book. Was rather let down.The authors do a good job of organizing their book, and providing reasonable examples. However, their examples are 95% from the MIT media lab which makes it annoyingly narcissistic, not that diverse, bias, and somewhat rote. It also brings to your mind the fact that they didn’t do as much ubiquitous research as you would’ve hoped.A lot of the thoughts they bring to the forefront, at least for me, were either “duh” or “you can’t generalize like that.” Some of their stories and examples strongly supported their argument, while some dragged on and went on tangents and were somewhat weak and not that relatable.I definitely learned some things from this book, and appreciated the cautiousness and optimism they bring to the table for future growth and progress. However I think there are better books out there then this one, and you could use your time more wisely.

I found it this book interesting but I think it is written in a confused way, or maybe it was just too difficult for a deep understanding in my case. I will probably go back to it as soon as I will have enough time to dedicate it.Questo libro é stato interessante, ma non so se perché trovo sia scritto in modo confuso o perché proprio non ci arrivo, diciamo che mi é sembrato di non arrivare in fondo alle questioni. This is a focused and refreshing read from a dual authorship that respects each other. In the leadership mentoring I've the privilege of doing with emerging leaders from around the globe, this is added to my list of "must read." The nine chapters contain ideas we all need to absorb and live out. It felt like I almost had a "mini course" on leadership from these esteemed leaders from MIT...most welcome. This is a bit of a fast read...but do not read it fast...I did one chapter a day, focusing on using the material in my conversations and whole-person mentoring. Well worth the read.

Citing examples from events of this decade and contrasting organizational approaches that are succeeding now with failing ones from Industrial Revolution practices, Joi paints the future in complex brush strokes that identify both the fading institutional dinosaurs that hold us back and the promising thousands of frogs that are rising to take their place. A difficult read, but well worth the effort.

While some ideas and anecdotes are interesting, the book seems a bit rambling and poorly edited. It is also not clear the extent of Joi's contribution other than his PS entries.
