I loved this book - what's not to love? Twisty plot - oh boy can JCP do twisty. Vic's maturing and growing as a person, as an investigator, it is so interesting how he adjusts his mindset as to certain people at the end of the story and it all feels natural and believable. There are several pretty big surprises as the story unfolded, or I should say I was surprised and I loved how Vic's reactions to each of those surprises was handled. Vic and Jacob were awesome, I just refuse to call them anything less than that. You can feel hard earned trust between them and I loved that such trust never wavers in this book. I certainly do not know if JCP plans any more books in the series - the ending in this one is absolutely satisfying, but there are possibilities if she wants to continue. Having said that, whether she wants to continue or not, I would have felt very annoyed if at that stage of their relationship, after everything they went through, they would start showing some annoying traits of romance characters (you know, breaking up, quarreling for nothing, etc.So yes, completely awesome and I think this quote summarizes this relationship pretty well:"Then you're in charge." Jacob pressed his forehead into mine, and though Bly was lurking around the cannery somewhere, I felt some of the knots inside me untangle as I focused on Jacob's nearness, the immensity of his presence. It was big, like everything about him is big. Yet somehow, that huge presence didn't drown out my essential me-ness, but rather, amplified it"And while I was not surprised that women in this book rocked (JCP is one of the few writers in this genre who writes fantastic female characters IMO), I still want to give her well deserved kudos. There is a woman who is kind of disgusting, but not in caricature sort of way, there are also women who are likeable, but not perfect by any means, they are basically human beings, all with at least a little bit of agency. They may be connected to Vic and Jacob in one way or another, but they are not there to be cheerleaders for them - they have their own lives and they are interesting.I loved this book and yes, I know I already said that :).

Just binged books 1 through 7; have blown my book budget and done nothing except read, and I'd do it all over again! I'm going to devour all of the shorts before book 8. Then start the series all over again, so I can savour it, because the first time through, I got so caught up in the suspense and the action that I couldn't read fast enough! What I love about this series:The writing is excellent and the editing impeccable through the entire series. The characters, each book, and the overarching plot are so good! In general, first person, single MC POV, isn't my favorite. and paranormals are the last genre I look to for new books. This series made me rethink my own preferences.Vic and Jacob are just...OMG! This series may be more mystery thriller than romance, but their love shines through and it's beautiful. It's also not all sunshine and roses and I loved the reality and the humor. They're not always in the mood at the same time, they both have insecurities, and they can both annoy one another. But with this author's incredible skill, both MCs grow, and their relationship grows through each book.I started reading this series at the beginning when book 8 popped up on my recommendations list. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers, though, so I'm happy that I just found this series now. Will I reread this series? Absolutely!Ty & Zane and Tommy & Prophet have to make room for Vic & Jacob in my heart and my head. {sigh} Wow! Just, wow!! 💗💗💗😄🔥

Poor Victor Bayne - ghosts are so complicated. You really can't just plow into this book without reading the whole series. At number seven, we get some of the most complicated goings-on that Vic has ever had to deal with - exploiting his powers like never before, and also running the risk of revealing just how powerful he is to people who he wants to keep in the dark.See? You have to read the others first. This series, while it falls roughly into the m/m genre, and does indeed center on the now very solid relationship between Victor and his "stiff" boyfriend Jacob Marks, is more about ghosts and trust. That's right.Victor is committed to the Chicago cops' "Psycop" program, in which he's a star (while hiding his real light under a bushel as it were). But Jacob has gotten himself promoted into the murky, government-backed psychic organization run by the Steve Jobs-like Constantine. Vic doesn't trust anyone but Jacob, and he really doesn't want anyone to fully understand how powerful a psychic he is...but everything in the previous books that's led him to this point in his psychic development begins to shift underneath him. New truths - new connections with people - begin to erode his notions and make him question his own motives.I know people can complain about these books...there is some sloppiness in the narrative consistency...and in this volume, "Spook Squad," the complexity of the psychic activity is so high that I found myself getting lost in the procedures...but I also really enjoyed the characters, who become more complex and interesting even as Victor begins to realize that he might just be fooling himself. This book satisfied me pretty well - and that's good because #8 won't be for a long time.
