In this engrossing book, veteran Wall Street Journal reporter Dinny McMahon illustrates the why China's storied economic boom is so fragile. He brings to life the problems brought by excessive debt and overcapacity with vivid scenes from his decade on the ground reporting in China. McMahon gives us the backstory of the world’s largest heavy-press forge in the hinterlands of Sichuan; guides us through auctions of decades-old baijiu; walks us through business decisions with a textile manufacturer investing in South Carolina; and explains Premier Li Keqiang’s frustration that even with all of China’s steel production, the country can’t produce a decent ballpoint pen. Along the way, we meet characters from all walks of life in China, from opinionated high-level bureaucrats to a poor farmer who lost his land. He does this all with a keen eye for detail and a remarkable ability to explain complicated economic and financial ideas in a clear, common-sense way. McMahon doesn't try to read the tea leaves of elite politics, and instead shows us in stories that are readable, refreshingly free of jargon, and at times heartbreaking why the Chinese miracle can't go on forever.

Second half of the book concentrate too much on political and cultural factors that diverges from what the title suggests, which is about economical and financial issues China faces. I would love to see more analysis and facts about issues around debt, housing, and change rate rather than politics.

Dinny McMahon writes an engaging book highlighting the weaknesses in the Chinese economy - the debt burden; struggle for private companies to remain afloat; how local governments appropriate land to sell for profit to ensure their basic budget. A decade spent in China sensitized him to why the Chinese economy makes no sense --- and is likely unsustainable. The book is a quick read of about 200 pages that looks at various interest groups in China -- the national government; the local government; state owned enterprises; private companies and the people. The national government has prioritized stability by increasing the average citizens' quality of life. However, this was done with massive debt and the incredible GDP increase that has lasted year after year. The debt and resulting inefficiencies were survivable when you are posting 8 - 10% increases in GDP. Now that is slowing and China becomes closer to escaping the "middle income trap" - can the Chinese government reform its economy before it all crashes down? Dinny McMahon is not optimistic and is even less so now the Xi has consolidated power. The book is an education --- strongly recommended as a third or fourth book on China. One thing every book on China needs is a good map of the provinces and major cities. The only problem with the book is the timing. Like the 2008 economic crisis -- everyone knew it was coming and there were warnings for years. The hard part is knowing when it would hit -- in that Dinny McMahon hedges his bets.

China’s and the global financial order’s future are far from certain, but the colorful anecdotes woven into this story of China’s current structural issues highlight well the risks facing China and the globalized financial and economic system.

This book was a pleasure to read. The author draws upon several very interesting and concrete examples of the trends and concepts that are emerging in the economy. The style is very clear and non-technical, while the case studies (ranging from overpriced teddy bears to extravagant ghost cities) kept the more abstract notions of faulty loans, optimism, inefficiency, etc. grounded in observable life. Overall, both a fun and very educational read!

Very useful for someone who has visited China and wondered about all those empty towers that ring almost every city. I'm only a quarter way through but it has been a fun and educational read so far. There are vivid examples interspersed throughout (not just real estate)that illustrate how debt and businesses think and operate in China, and why they play by a different set of rules compared to other countries.

Many interesting anecdotes about Chinese banks, but no answers about the overall financial situation. From this book and several articles in the Wall St. Journal, we can conclude that there's plenty of debt in the private banking sector.

The author presents convincing insights into the structure and management of the Chinese economy with regards to how it has lead to a frightening level of debt. Well written and readable. I've read other views that are less critical of the Chinese, though. This helped moderate McMahon's views to somewhat less frightening ones.
