A Comprehensive Guide to Bhagavad-Gita with Literal Translation, by H.D. Goswami

Review

"Anyone that has read one of the several English translations of the famed Bhagavad-gita, with its richness of life-affirming truth, may have come away feeling spiritually refreshed yet vaguely uncertain as to whether or not the Gita upholds a clearly developed system of thought. With its sophisticated thematic approach, this Comprehensive Guide brings clarity to the Gita's content in a most thorough and systematic way, inviting both first-time and seasoned readers to vigorously engage with the text while enjoying the rewards of deep understanding. Especially impressive is the fact that this volume not only provides the reader with a stimulating learning experience, but also serves as an exceptional reference book for specific topics. Thus, in terms of my own Gita studies, I am happy to have the benefit of this Comprehensive Guide, as well as the excellent, highly literal, translation that comes with it. And I certainly will be recommending this book to my students of Indian philosophy." - Kenneth Valpey, Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies"In the late 18th century Bhagavad-gita became the first Sanskrit work to be rendered in a European tongue, and since that time it has generated countless translations and secondary analyses. Among these, however, H.D. Goswami's Comprehensive Guide with Literal Translation excels in its capacity to schematize and summarize the Gita's powerful appeal as a source of perennial wisdom. The literal translation's careful nuancing demonstrates the author's Sanskrit mastery and philosophical expertise while the Guide's focused precision and theological depth reflect the training of a Harvard doctorate as well as the spiritual insight of one dedicated to the sannyasa (renounced) order. Thematically divided into twelve parts, each with multiple subsections that focus on major issues, the Guide's strongest features are its expert pinpointing of verses that pertain to each theological topic and its contextual analysis, articulated in succinct crisp prose that eschew both academic jargon and sectarian rhetoric. It is an excellent resource not only for those approaching the Gita as a spiritual manual, but also for those seeking a more systematic and rigorous understanding of its philosophical content. I look forward to using this work in my Hinduism courses." - Edwin Bryant, Professor of Hindu Religion and Philosophy, Rutgers University"H.D. Goswami's Comprehensive Guide with Literal Translation provides readers with unique insight into the essential meaning of Bhagavad-gita, with succinct, carefully crafted explications of complex philosophical themes. Concise yet thorough, this skillful exposition, containing hundreds upon hundreds of key Gita references, affords a conceptual window into the core elements of Krishna's teachings to Arjuna. Throughout this work we are graced by the knowledge, Sanskrit expertise and personal illuminations of one who is not only a highly trained scholar, but also a widely experienced spiritual teacher. Goswami is thus to be commended for so eloquently polishing the various facets of this most precious and rare jewel of sacred literature so that we, the readers, may perceive that much more of its unbounded brilliance." - Graham M. Schweig, Professor of Philosophy & Religion, Christopher Newport University

From the Author

"Having read, studied and cherished the Gita for decades at the feet of my teacher Srila Prabhupada, I could not help but share the profound conceptual connections that make this Sanskrit text so magical. The Gita is widely recognized as a work of spiritual and philosophical genius, and early on I fell in love with its Sanskrit text. My sincere wish here, through explication and translation, is to bring the general reader deep within that original Sanskrit. I hope you enjoy the journey." - H.D. Goswami

I have taught the Bhagavad-gita, in depth, since the early 80's, and been a student of the gita since the early 70's. This guide book is the best I have read. It's simply superb whether the reader has an academic or spiritual interest, or both. The author has organized the text in such a way, with reference to the verses, that the flow and purpose of the gita are crystal clear. It's also a joyful reading experience. It's not often one finds a "can't put down" book in this genre.

While I have read many translations/commentaries of the Bhagavad-gita over the years, this one is peerless in providing a stunning synthesis of topics/themes that trace their way throughout the verses. These key concepts can be easily missed by those who don't have a mastery of the original language (as the author does). Many of these themes uncovered are not merely abstractions for intellectual reflection, but concrete invitations to hear the core of the BG, the call to faithful and fruitful devotion that offers meaning, freedom and joy.

Great work. It's like a systematic theology. I highly recommend it. Presents Bhagavad-gita as it is according to itself without any concocted doctrine designed to serve some author's personal designs. Would be a good textbook for a class in religion.

I am very impressed with this Translation. It is an awesome Book, including the in depth commentary. A masterfully, respectful & very proper edition. This Srimad Bhagavad-Gita, although very literally composed is also very reader/student friendly. I humbly highly recommend this very fine Volume. Sincerely, Humbly & Thankfully Submitted

As a full professor, scholar, and author in the fields of international and intercultural communication, I find this book to be extraordinarily helpful for understanding the values that undergird Indian culture. HD Goswami is an outstanding scholar, drawing from both scholarly and sectarian sources to patiently and clearly explicate the Bhagavad-Gita. His mastery of Sanskrit is literally unmatched among Western scholars: he is the only person to ever score a perfect grade on Harvard's Sanskrit PhD comprehensive exam! This, together with his decades of study of the Gita and other Indian texts, makes this book essential reading for anyone who wants deep comprehension of the Gita. The author also provides a commonsense, contemporary translation of the Gita, which is also very helpful. Overall, this book is a must-have!

I was gifted this book in soft cover by a friend. I had not previously read the Gita cover to cover, but rather bits and pieces. HD Goswami's book clearly and simply reveals Krishna's message in Krishna's own words. I particularly appreciated that the author's book doesn't proselytize or attempt to preach or convert you, or demonstrate any other agenda other than to genuinely and authentically expose no more or less than Krishna and Arjuna's dialog - the Bhagavad Gita. I enjoyed the book so much that I regifted it and purchased the kindle edition for daily rereading and reference.

This little gem of a book is a deep yet concise comprehensive introduction to a classic of spirituality for all non-sectarian seekers and practitioners of Bhakti. You'll learn how to regulate your understanding of the Gita so that it acts through concerted effort to deepen knowledge of the self. The Gita is filled with transformative transcendental knowledge, but few know how to properly utilize it. Some of its interpreters aim for powers; others, for sectarianism. This is not a Hindu book. It's a spiritual treatise that every Christian, Buddhist, Jew, Muslim, agnostic, atheist, and layperson will do well to study. Turn yourself into an instrument for the benefit of society as a whole by reading its content since it's been published as a comprehensive intro for both scholars and students alike.

This is my favorite translation of the Bhagavad Gita, and I've read a few. HD Goswami's translation is modern, concise, and humorous. It's easy to read and pairs well with the awesome translation by Srila Prabhupada.

The story is ridiculous, the characters unbelievable and unlikable, none more so than Marino and supergirl - niece Lucy. How a well known, respected author could write something this bad is unbelievable in it's own right. I gave it two stars because at some point it became so humorous i was beginning to enjoy it for all the wrong reasons. I couldn't wait to see how she ended this mess. Needless to say, the ending was as silly as the rest of the book.

This book started good, slowed then a slice and ended with hope. As an officer personally, this particular case made good points most don't see it take into consideration and ending on a major point. Different kind of case but Cornwell ties things in nicely in her books. I enjoy her books because I hold multiple degrees and have a wide variety of experience that her character's resonate with at times and remind me of particular terms, actions or things learned early on in my career. Even being in this type of profession the books give me a reprieve from the real life unbelievable situations.

This book picks right up from the previous installment, Black Notice, so I recommend that you read that one first. The first few chapters are a bit tedious as Kay Scarpetta goes through a lot of introspection from almost being murdered in Black Notice. I was hoping for more action and it slowly comes around, but not to the same suspense as the earlier books of the series that made me turn page after page.I think if you are a Scarpetta series fan, you'd like this book, as you've been bringing the history of Kay, Benton, Lucy and Marino along with you. I think many reviewers here are a bit harsh, even though this is not as good as the first few in the series. If you are new to the series, this would probably be a 3 star book.

What I didn't like was the fact, that IMHO, one of the main persons, in this book was more or less left out...That is, details, as to his thoughts, motives, what made him the was he was...there are IMHO, a vageness, about the 'wolf-man", that should have been included...If any one has ever read "THEWATCHER", by Dean Koontz, will understand what I'm trying to point out...his "MONSTER", was given, feelings it expressed, how it felt, why it was angery, in short, he had substance, you couldn't help but "feel", for the poor thing...this was missing here....another charector in the book, her motives, were never made clear, either, before she was 'rubbed out', near the books end.....she was nasty, but I never grasped her true motives or reasons for being that way..I think/ believe, more defining, of the story line was needed...I truly felt let down, at the ending..

I very much enjoyed this book and I have read most of the Scarpetta novel as by Patricia Cornwell. Generally I am completely satisfied with them but this time I was very disappointed with the ending it just kinda cuts off and left me hanging with a feeling that there should've been more to it. I had so many unanswered questions for instance do Lucy and Jo end up getting into trouble with the ATF or does the family of the werewolf try to avenge his death or do Kay and Talley continue their relationship? I just feel like I was left hanging on too many issues this time. Sorry Ms. Cornwell but I was a little let down and disappointed with this one.

Not one of her best but definitely a good read with an interesting plot.. Love all of her novels, they only take me a day or two to read because they are so good. Now that I have to read a romantic novel for school I can barely force myself to read it. Cornwell has spoiled me!! I've read almost all in the series. I love the science behind this book, she does an amazing job researching. Point of Origin is another great one by her if you are into the more forensic books.

Dr. Scarpetta manages to return to work which helps her deal with her grief but she returns to chaos in her usually well organized department. A horrific murder, a personal attack on her professional position, familial disfunction and a friend in trouble all woven together to provide a very entertaining few hours lost in an absorbing story.

Full of suspense. Dr. Scarlett's is a great character to follow. She has integrity, but sometimes makes mistakes. She is in control of her environment, but has plenty of opportunity to step outside the box, to be creative. She's completely human, making her easy to like. I like learning about the forensics. This is another masterful novel by Cornwell.

About the Author

David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator with Bill Mollison of the permaculture concept following the publication of Permaculture One in 1978. Since then he has written several more books, developed three properties using permaculture principles, conducted workshops and courses in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan. Within the growing and international permaculture movement, David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture ideas through practical projects and teaching by personal example, that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism. As well as constant involvement in the practical side of permaculture, David is passionate about the philosophical and conceptual foundations for sustainability, which he explored in Future Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt to Peak Oil and Climate Change (2009), and Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2003). With an increasingly high profile as a public speaker, David Holmgren provides leadership with his refreshing and unorthodox approach to the environmental issues of our time. David lives with his partner Su Dennett and their son Oliver at "Melliodora", a one-hectare permaculture demonstration site at Hepburn Springs, Central Victoria, Australia. I actually bought this for a class. The project required a book of our choosing. The following is my response to the project questions. Why did you choose this book? I initially chose this book because I have had an interest in “sustainability” for a few years now. Over the summer of 2014, my wife’s family and I took a roadtrip to southern Florida to visit my brother-in-law, who was, at the time, an intern at a sustainability education center for missionaries, called H.E.A.R.T. villiage. There I first learned of the permaculture concept, and became enamored by it. In preparation for this project, I found a list of “essential” books on the topic, and chose this one because of the reviews. Why is this an important topic? As any environmental scientist will tell you, it is the people who work directly with the land who are in a unique place to bring about tremendous environmental change. Their intimate knowledge of how plants and animals interact with one another is the key to ecosystem restoration and stability. “For any human culture to be considered sustainable it must have the capacity (proven only with historical hindsight) to reproduce itself down the generations while providing human material needs without cataclysmic and long-term breakdown. If it is energetically impossible for high energy society (such as ours) to be anything more than a pulse in the long run of human history, then it cannot, by definition, be sustainable, no matter how much we shuffle the technological deckchairs.” Today, it is almost common knowledge that we are in need of global structural and economic reforms. Climate change, resource depletion, peak oil, desertification, etc. Modern civilization is a global one, and so these challenges are faced by everyone. We need systems and models that anyone can utilize to help our species mitigate and adapt to these problems.Permaculture is one such system, and a very promising one at that. Permaculture: (Permanent Culture) - The use of systems thinking and design principles that provide the organizing framework for implementing consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature - a creative design response to a world of declining energy and resource availability - yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs, simultaneously restoring damaged & destroyed landscapes. Permaculture is a system with immediate gains (by way of production and restoration) and does not require environmentally taxing inputs. Nor does this practice require government intervention (something which I’m sure we all desire a bit less of.) Permaculture comes pre-packaged with straightforward principles and pathways that can aid our civilization in its much needed energy descent, can help restore damaged and destroyed landscapes, can provide bountifully to human material (and even psychological?) needs, and most importantly: can help us build a more sustainable and prosperous world. The Book: Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability by David Holmgren.C. 2002 - Sustainable Design - Environmental EthicsWhat was the author’s purpose in writing this book? “To explain permaculture to a wider audience that may not be attracted by the organic gardening label. It is especially aimed at activists, designers, teachers, researchers, students, and others grappling with the vexed issues of sustainability within a wide range of fields.”Did the author make a logical argument? Since this is mostly a work of philosophy, thankfully, Holmgren sets up the book’s argument in the introduction. “Like all ideas, permaculture is founded on some fundamental assumptions that are critical to both understanding and evaluating it:”---The environmental crisis is real and of a magnitude that will certainly transform modern global industrial society beyond recognition. In the process, the well-being and even survival of the world’s expanding population is directly threatened.---The ongoing and future impacts of global industrial society and human numbers on the world’s wondrous biodiversity are assumed to be far greater than the massive changes of the last few hundred years.---Humans, although unusual within the natural world, are subject to the same scientific (energy) laws that govern the material universe, including the evolution of life.---The tapping of fossil fuels during the industrial era was seen as the primary cause of the spectacular explosion in human numbers, technology, and every other novel feature of modern society.---Despite the inevitably unique nature of future realities, the inevitable depletion of fossil fuels within a few generations will see a return to the general patterns observable in nature and pre-industrial societies dependent on renewable energy and resources. Holmgren then goes on to explain how Permaculture differs from organic gardening or technological responses to these problems. Permaculture:Gives priority to using existing wealth to rebuilding natural capital, especially trees and forests, as a proven storage of wealth to sustain humanity into a future with less fossil fuel.---Emphasises bottom-up “redesign” processes, starting with the individual and household as the drivers for change at the market, community and cultural level.---More fundamentally, was predicated on the likelihood of some degree of collapses and breakdown in technology, economics and even society, which is not envisaged or designed for by the “green tech” optimists but is a current reality for many people around the world.---Sees pre-industrial sustainable societies as providing models that reflect the more general system design principles observable in nature, and relevant to post-industrial systems. Arguably, one of the most important things Holmgren argues about the permaculture concept, is that it is predicated on the natural flows of universal energy laws - either humanity will naturally begin to adapt in this way (and so formulaic principles and pathways can help us mitigate more effectively), or perhaps they will bridge the energy gap (fusion?)...however, new technology does not come prepackaged with a “wisdom chip,” so organizing societies in sustainable ways is the most responsible and sensible thing we can do. Given the tenacity with which Holmgren defends these principles and pathways, with the wealth of 25 years of personal observation and experimentation and a myriad of scientific wisdom, I say that yes, his arguments are quite solid.Do you feel the items were logically based and true? Yes. Example: refer to IPCC report AR5Did the author keep you interested? I have been trained to study Philosophy, so this is my jam. However, I might warn those I would recommend this book to about its intellectual density.Share your favorite part of the book:---The Permaculture Flower (“The key domains that require transformation to create a sustainable culture.”)---The Twelve Permaculture Principles (“Generalized principles can be derived from the study of both the natural world and pre-industrial societies.”)---How he repeatedly makes the point that “The process of providing for people’s needs within ecological limits and in more sustainable ways requires a cultural revolution.”---How he explains that “business as usual” tactics will not solve the crises we are facing. What did you like most about the book? How carefully and logically it was written. How well mapped out its principles are. What did you like least? This is not a typical gardening book, but more of a philosophical treatise on the underpinnings of the permaculture concept. Having a background in philosophy and a craving for deep ecological understanding, I really enjoyed it. However, it is hard to recommend to anyone without those requisites. It is not, in any sense, light reading. The issues Holmgren raises could be very disturbing to some. It attempts to make a perennial statement of ethics, so for anyone who has studied moral philosophy, it might seem a bit misanthropic for those not already convinced by its precepts. The biggest problem with the book is its unashamedly anarchistic view of civilization, and so its callous attitude toward government. This will be an immediate turnoff to some, and leaves gaping holes where large scale policy recommendations might have been beneficial. (Though this was his point. Radical change is individual change.)What will be your lasting impression of the subject? This book was definitely highly influential to me. It helped me mentally structure my interest in sustainability, and helped me develop specific methods of systems thinking that I had before only conceptualized. I will be using this book throughout my academic career.Did you learn something new from the book? One of the most important concepts I learned from this book was the relationship between natural laws and human action. Specifically, Holmgren’s recognition of the 4th energy law of maximum power efficiency as a sociogeobiophysical design principle, and the application of this law to humane terra formations. Demonstrations of these kinds of relationships introduced “systems thinking,” and ultimately has lead me to pursue the field of systems ecology.Would you recommend this book? How would you rate it? Yes. However, as I’ve said, I’d warn the reader of its philosophical density. On a scale of ten, I’d give it a rating of 8.5.

Holmgren turns a good idea into a religion. Sustainable agriculture is too important for a closed shop policy. The book shows the ideas but it is more of a cult than a practical guide to sustainable agriculture. I recommend other books to start with like the ones from Shepard or Savory or Toensmeier. If you want a new religion go for Holmgren. If you want advice for practical sustainable agriculture go somewhere else.

I wanted to love this book but I felt it was so hard to read. Very creative and deep thinking but unless you have a pretty good understanding of permaculture this book might just fly by your head. I had a hard time understanding some examples when it was describing David's native Australian countryside. Also it felt like it was a jumble of notes compiled together. Sort of reminded me of Bruce Lee's Tao of JKD. They try and categorize each section into the Permaculture principles but there is so much jumping around and reconnect I lose sight on what that section is focusing on.Lots of run on sentences that were really wordy. I had to read over many things two to three times to try to wrap my head around things. You really need to be focused to take in the information in this book. It does show how permaculture is a diverse web of interactions both on an ecological and principle level. But if you studied permaculture you'd know that already. If you're serious about permaculture get it and dive in. You'll find nuggets of information. But be warned you might get frustrated with his writing style.

A masterpiece of rigor and moral clarity. Holmgren has taken the next important step in the global Permaculture movement started by the brilliant and charismatic Bill Mollison, in that he has crystallized Mollison's insights into a mandala of twelve key principles. These principles go well beyond the detailed suggestions for regenerative gardening techniques that comprise most Permaculture literature--they are generalized so as to be universally applicable, yet clear and precise in their explanations. This theoretically dense book should be read slowly and deliberately in a group--a book club, for example, so that these principles can be thoroughly grasped and discussed. If Bill Mollison's Permaculture Design Manual is the practical permaculture "bible," this book is its theoretical complement.

I read this book and could see how this thinking about use and re-use, planning and observing will help not just my garden but my life. Really useful examples of each principle and in depth discussion of what they mean, how they can be applied in lots of cases.

Book arrived in good condition, good info.

condition of the book was excellent, however David Holmgren spends almost the entire time convincing the reader that he is knowledgable and doesn not provide any information on sustainable permaculture

This is a good book for those who are new to permaculture.I think there are better ones out there, but this covers the basics.
