. . . promises well-drawn characters embroiled in a clash of cultures as in the 9th Century England the Danes increase their invasions of the vulnerable, divided country of Saxon Uhtred, second son of not-so-beloved Earl Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Bamburg Castle, Northumbria). The story spans roughly the second decade of Uhtred’s life as he moves through the events that destroy his family, remove him from his rightful heritage, and change him from reluctant Christian to happier Dane to blissful Saxon again. He survives a battle at age 12, murderous treachery of his uncle at age 16, and eventually enters service to King Alfred, the Saxon kind of Wessex, as the other Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia fall to the Danish invasion. Readers will enjoy immersion into both Saxon and Danish cultures, appreciating the contrasts in values. Readers will enjoy the relationships Uhtred establishes with Ragnar, with Brida his companion, then with the Saxon king Alfred. The surprises are there, for Uhtred, for Alfred, and for the reader. Readers will, more than anything, enjoy Cornwell’s depiction of everyday 9th Century life, of his characters and their depths, and, especially the astounding battle scenes, all the while appreciating Uhtred’s awareness of the foolishness of some of his youthful decisions and the hazards he risks his life with, often unnecessarily. We especially admire the complexity of our human predecessors’ lives as Cornwell presents them, fulfilling the promises of the Prologue with a great story.

I'm still in the glow of living vicariously in Uhtred's world. I can't begin to tell exactly why this story affected me so deeply, except to say that the author did everything right. He lost no time making me care about the main character, just a child at the beginning of the story. Within the first dozen pages, I was hooked, invested in the story--wanting to know more, and needing to know young Uhtred's fate. The narration is first person, and occasionally, throughout the story, the narrator intrudes, addressing the reader directly. While in some books, this doesn't work, in The Last Kingdom, it worked so well, I anticipated when it would happen, and I looked forward to it. Each time, it upped the tension just a knot. Another thing that worked incredibly well was that this entire book is told by Uhtred as an old man, sharing the tale of his life, looking back on events--An incredibly entertaining stroll through 9th century, English history mingled with a few fictional characters. Outstanding read.

Great story of Vikings invading what will be a future England. It was such a pleasure to read a book with pieces of real history, real people and real places, in it. I loved the fact that author did not try to make a fictional main character, Uthred, a contemporary humanitarian but gave him a perky, mischievous and often cruel personality fitting the Viking image. I also loved the sense of humor, although, most of the time it was a black humor. But I could not help laughing while reading about, otherwise tragic, end of Prince Edmund. There is a lot of carnage in this book (after all it is a book about a war) but only some of the gruesome details are described, so reader is not swamped with too many horror images. The reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 are: 1) Too many battles. It may be a plus for other readers but once I read about fighting in “shield wall” I did not need to read about it again and again. 2) I had problem placing many people with similar-sounding names starting with “ash” and figuring out how they are related. There is actually a map at the beginning at the book and list of places and names but I missed it since my kindle opened on first chapter and I just started reading. So my advise to readers is; do not miss map and list, they are very helpful.I liked very much author’s Amazon web page that, by itself, is a great story told with a great humor.I think I will try next a book from different series by this author (hoping for fewer battles).

I love reading epic fantasy, most especially when the story is somewhat based on history. My inclination to read this book is due to the TV series. My interest is piqued to find out more about the life of the male protagonist, Uthred, since the TV adaptation covers only the best highlights of the story. This book entails the life of Uthred at age 10 to 20 during the war of Danes and England around 866 to 877 A.D. The POV is from Uthred himself. The story has developed and progressed the way I have expected it to be...in chronological order since it is based on history. The names of places and characters are a bit hard for me to pronounce or even remember, and so I have jotted them down (like Alfred who is constantly writing, LOL) for reference in my future reading. I have enjoyed reading this book. I am excited to read the next installment and find out more of Uthred's destiny.

“The Last Kingdom” is fun and easy-to-read, well-written and brings to life King Alfred’s battles with the Vikings. Much of this book parallels the TV series "The Vikings." I would recommend this book for the young adult crowd who has enjoyed the “Harry Potter” series. For serious readers of historical fiction, however, I would suggest they look elsewhere. The language, style and subject matter are designed for a sixteen year-old male readership; there are no feminine voices in the novel; and the treatment of history is superficial.

Review

In an age awash with easy believism, we need voices like Paul Washer's that remind us of The Gospel Call and True Conversion. We are all tempted to believe that we are beyond the basics and in need of something more something new. However, Washer reminds us that there is nothing more important and more relevant than getting the gospel right, making the gospel clear, and trusting that gospel to do its work of calling, saving, and securing a people to God and for God. Praise God for the gospel and books like this that help us know, understand, and love it more deeply. --Voddie Baucham, pastor of preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas, and author of The Ever-Loving TruthBeing a Christian is not just a matter of making a decision for Jesus or turning over a new leaf. It is a miracle of grace in which a sinner is brought by God's power from death to life. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer brilliantly and clearly helps the reader understand that truth, carefully opening the Scriptures and explaining how the power of the gospel ought to impact our lives as Christians. A much-needed, pastoral, and challenging book! --Greg Gilbert, senior pastor of Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and author of What Is the Gospel?By God's sovereign grace, Paul Washer's ministry has been particularly blessed to instruct this generation in the basics of true conversion and the gospel call. I highly commend this careful but simple treatment of these vital issues. May God bless it to the preparation of His people to share the gospel of peace and to the salvation of many persons. --Sam Waldron, academic dean and professor of systematic theology at the Midwest Center for Theological Studies, Owensboro, Kentucky

From the Inside Flap

The apostle Paul gave the gospel the first place in his preaching, endeavored with all his might to proclaim it clearly, and even went so far as to pronounce a curse upon all those who would pervert its truth. Yet how sad it is that many, even among those considering themselves evangelicals, have reduced the gospel message to a few trite statements to be repeated, and view conversion as a mere human decision. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer challenges such easy believism as he examines the real meaning of things like faith, repentance, and receiving Christ. He also deals extensively with the effects of saving grace that God promises in the new covenant; namely, the creation of new hearts and new people. "In an age awash with easy believism, we need voices like Paul Washer's that remind us of The Gospel Call and True Conversion. We are all tempted to believe that we are 'beyond the basics' and in need of something more something new. I struggled with how many stars to give this book. As for truth, it is a 5 star book. This book has in many ways been a blessing to me. Paul Washer quotes and references so many scriptures to provide evidence that what he is stating is true. I have struggled for many years believing these truths while having many people in my life, including pastors, telling me that I am wrong. Thankfully, the Lord has sustained me, continued to open my eyes and has not allowed me to believe a "watered down" gospel. With all of that said, Paul Washer does not tell like minded believers what to do with regards to church. I live in a large city in the northwest, and have visited countless churches in my area. All of these churches struggle with what Paul Washer accurately states is the problem with most evangelical churches in the U.S. Case in point is the church I have been attending. The pastor states in his sermon that he would rather have a church of 10 people following Jesus than a big mega church, and the church is not about a building, it is about the people. I totally agree with these statements. Unfortunately, the pastor and leaders of the church speak differently with their actions. They are spending over 7 million dollars purchasing and remodeling the existing church building - which I thought was quite nice and adequate. At a different sermon, the pastor admonished people for not giving generously to the church building, and that was after stating that the congregation gave 5 million dollars. This is a church of 500 people! I was really hoping that Paul Washer would provide some wisdom for those of us unable to find a like minded church. In addition, I wish his ministry, Heart Cry, would look into planting churches in large cities in our own country. We really need them. I struggle with knowing whether I should just give up going to church or go to a church where the gospel is not accurately presented.

Just a young man trying to learn the Gospel all around and correctly. This 3 book series has been a great help & it’s such a great comfort that when I go to read the scriptures these truths are backed overwhelmingly. Paul Washer is trustworthy and constantly quotes from the Bible his points in this book

Christians must return to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything else is idolatry. So many are being deceived today. The points made by Paul Washer need to be proclaimed everywhere.

Everyone needs to read this. What the church has drifted from in these last days. Why so few will be saved. Not a work of man but of God.

Paul Washer has done it again. This time in written format. He speaks straight truth that the church today tends to disregard and brush over. Washer is intentional in portraying the truth. I just got done study the book, reading 2 chapters of the book and visiting the numerous scripture verses he uses to back up everything he says. You'll find yourself highlighting almost every word and then bouncing back and forth between scripture and Washer's book to saturate yourself in the Word of God.

Great

Paul Washer does a incredible job in presenting the true Gospel and how it should apply to the believers life. He speaks on common misconceptions and believes the church has today and how believers should act on their faith. If you are looking for a book with powerful scripture and the promises of God, this is the book for you!

One of the best looks at Christianity in a world of easy Christian-ease. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to challenge themselves in this world of slap happy churches.

When you are a young teenager when someone does something to embarrass you, you just cannot forget it. It can change your whole life. When a 14 year old is sent away to boarding school because of a vicious prank played on her, her life is changed. She grows up to be successful in her work but not so much in her love life. She happens to run into the irresponsible teen boy who embarrassed her so deeply and sets out to get back at him. But she finds that they both grew up and changed. Interesting treatment of how when we try to get even with someone for a slight it can backfire on us. The conclusion is not expected.

I have a hard time not completing a book I’ve started but wish I would have quit reading this one. Very hard to read people being so repeatedly stupid. Total waste of my time.

NOTHING was funny about this story. Very little was believable. All in all, best to avoid.

This was probably the most ridiculous, least realistic book I have read in my life. No relationship could possibly succeed with major rifts occurring every day. And the behavior of the ex-girlfriend, I know it’s fiction but not fantasy. It reminds me of something a 3rd grader would write, if I could give it a zero, I would. I could not even finish it, and I rarely put a book down.

Not funny, immature, predictable, and a huge waste. I can't wait to delete this trash. I actually paid real money for this.

This is the second time I have read this book, It is so good. Billy Havenwood pulls a childish prank on Christian in High School and it changes her life. Years later Christina sees Bill and she decides that she is going to get her revenge on him for what he did to her in high school. Bill has been cut off from his father and that can't happen because it will destroy his plans. Telling his father that he is getting married the only name that he can think of is Christian. Christina agrees to go along with his scene for his father. The plans of there own are working perfectly until they both develop feelings for one another. The thinks that happen in this book will make you laugh out loud !! What happens when Christian's plan blows up in her face ? Can they make there way back to one another or is too much damage been done to each other ?

Her Perfect Revenge by Anna Mara is a really fun read. I love the interaction between Christina and Bill, and also William. The characters are interesting, charming and flawed. The storyline is compelling and keeps you guessing. The only thing that really annoyed me was the nicknames Bill and Christina give each other. I just can’t deal with people calling each other “honey bunny” and the like. It was bad enough when they were using such cringe-worthy nicknames to convince others they were in love, and even worse when they were using it for real. The dialogue throughout the book is brilliantly done, except during the period Bill and Christina are in a relationship for real, which is such a shame. The brief period the reader gets to see them in a relationship is, disappointingly, the worst part of the book. The cat and mouse phase is much more interesting and satisfying – their chemistry and interaction during this time is magic.I started reading Her Perfect Revenge right after finishing Mara's other novel, Why Romeo Hates Juliet. I liked Mara’s writing style and unconventional plot structure. However, upon finishing Her Perfect Revenge, I find myself a little disappointed that the basic premise was basically copied for the two books: Hero and heroine play each other, both are initially too stubborn to admit their true feelings for each other and a love-hate relationship unfolds. About 80% into the book they finally admit their feelings for each other and experience a few days of romantic bliss. Then the heroine messes everything up and the relationship comes to a screeching halt. The hero and heroine both fall into a state of depression but refuse to communicate with each other. Over a year passes before they meet again, the truth about the reasons behind their failed relationship comes out and they reconcile. The first time I read this plot construction I thought it was fresh and refreshing; however, I will think twice before reading another of Mara’s books, as it seems she’s just sticking to this one basic construction. I sincerely hope she finds a way to give her next book an unpredictable plot structure.Overall I enjoyed this book as much as I did Why Romeo Hates Juliet, I just wish it didn't follow the same basic plot structure.flag

I love the romance and comedy, the problems, and solutions, and the twist. But I was wondering... What happened to Stephie? You know what, never mind. She probably died was and alone! Oh, and, BTW for all you readers, Stephie is the evil girlfriend! So many secrets, but I can't tell you them all! 😉

This book was OK - nothing great but not really bad. The story involves Christina, who was bullied and harrassed in high school by Bill. She meets up with him years later and decides to exact revenge. This was billed as a "laugh out loud romantic comedy." It wasn't really a comedy at all to me. Bill and his friend, Jake, have serious problems with alcohol abuse. Christina can't seem to get past her teen years involving the bullying situation. Even as she meets Bill later, she can't see what he has become as an adult. These are all serious issues! The money Bill's family had made some parts of the story unrealistic. Were they really unconcerned when she lost the engagement "rock?" When Christina moved into Bill's family home - that didn't ring true, either.Fair story - not really a laugh-out-loud story, though!
