From Booklist

Williams has written an entertaining sequel to Dancing on the Edge of the Roof (2002). Juanita Lewis' move from Columbus, Ohio, to Paper Moon, Montana, has afforded her the new life she so desperately set out to find. Yet she still feels wanderlust. In the middle of her new adventure to visit those places still on her list, her eccentric friend, Millie, dies. Returning to Paper Moon to attend the funeral forces her to reprioritize her dreams. Millie surprises the whole town and leaves Juanita an unexpected windfall. Overnight, Juanita goes from living, loving, and cooking at the diner to running a bed-and-breakfast and going to culinary school. For the first time in her life, she has financial independence, love, and too much on her plate. Juanita rises to the occasion, however, balancing work, school, and family. She no longer has to rely on romance novels to find love; she has found her own side of a dream. Lillian LewisCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

From the Inside Flap

What are you supposed to do with a restored spirit? Eventually, I got some answers. I just didn't expect to get so many. When Juanita Lewis arrived in Paper Moon, Montana, courtesy of a Greyhound bus, she was just looking for a brief respite. Instead, she found a home, friends, and a man to love. But this leave-your-attitude-by-the-door woman made a promise to herself-one that she intends to keep. Now that she's got a place to come back to, Juanita wants to see the world. A trip out West with her eccentric trucker friend, Peaches, leads to a cooking stint at a new age spa for skinny celebrities. Crazy, but its here that Juanita decides to take her talent for cooking to a new level . . . and make it her dream. She also learns something about life: It does turn out the way you planned it-just be ready to change the plan a few times along the way. Just as Juanita's journey begins, she's called back to Paper Moon, having inherited an old, slightly haunted B&B, as well as a mountain of decisions. There's her self-centered, irresponsible daughter, insisting that she get some sense and come back home to Columbus, and a son who's doing things Juanita can't bear to think about. So how does a middle-aged black woman from the projects follow her heart when it's heading in so many different directions? By asking the right questions, then listening with her soul.

It's amazing how much you can get accomplished if you don't give a damn about what other people think. ~MillieJuanita Louis and her new friends from Paper Moon, Montana have returned in On the Right Side of a Dream. The story picks right back up from the previous book as Juanita sets off on her new journey, departing Paper Moon in Peaches' big purple rig headed to the west coast. When Juanita first arrived in Paper Moon, she was running from her old life, and more so running from herself. She'd lived a humdrum life in Ohio and desperate for an escape. She found that and more in Paper Moon. Leaving Paper Moon was a bittersweet moment, Juanita still needed to experience life and explore the vestiges of life she'd never seen. Although Jess had fallen for Juanita, he didn't stand in the way of her goal, he let her know that he would be waiting for her to return. With his downright demand, he encouraged her to visit an old buddy's restaurant out in California. It was there that Juanita discovered a new journey she wanted to partake. This time Juanita isn't traveling alone, she and Peaches are like Thelma and Louise discovering new things, until Juanita lands in a day spa in Sedona. The book progresses slowly with vivid imagery and breath-taking scenery. The turning point is when Juanita hears about Millie's death and returns home Paper Moon to find she's inherited Millie's B&B. The overwhelming sense of panic sets in as the opportunities and decisions mount up. Millie's estranged son, Broderick sets his sites on the B&B giving Juanita yet another obstacle to climb. And if those decisions weren't enough, her old life decides to sneak back in as well through her daughter Bertie.Sheila Williams' characters remind the reader that there are so many lessons in life to learn if you get to living and not merely existing. Her characters are vivid and some full of spunk. Juanita bares her soul allowing her fears, doubts to leak through the pages. Her sarcasm, wit and inner thoughts take you on a journey through her eyes. There are many quotes and hilarious moments that will stay with you long after you've finished. Like the first book, I enjoyed this one thoroughly. 5 Stars ☕☕☕☕☕www.coffeebreaksandbookmarks.wordpress.com

I read the first book Dancing on the Edge of the Root and it inspired me so much that I needed to know what happened to all the characters, especially Juanita. She shows the reader that it's never too late to reinvent yourself. She shows us that life is full of twists and turns, but we must be able to maneuver and sometimes we have to make our own joy. Great job.

This was a good sequel! It was adventurous and sweet yet annoying and practical. Very well written. I would definitely recommend this book.

Saw this book recommended on a few forums and could barely make it through the audiobook. The message is simple and well intentioned, but the book really belabors the point. The whole thing could be summarized in maybe a quarter of the time...The narrator was, far and away, the most annoying part of the book, though. He uses very strange accents, over accentuates his sentences, and has a weird, condescending tone. I listen to a good amount of audiobooks and he's the worst I've ever heard. He insists on reading quotes in weird, highfalutin manners of speech that I'm amazed were never stopped/corrected by anyone producing, editing, or reviewing the content. He's distracting and might be better suited to reading, say, children's books... but honestly he probably just shouldn't do this for a living. If you do want to read the book, definitely *don't* get the audio version.

Hmm.. the narrator's voice aggravated me. I don't know maybe it was because he came across as condescending in his tone and style. I liked the cow part, but the rest seemed common sense to me. (Maybe I didn't need this book afterall?) It is also read painfully slow. I dunno, I read a lot of books and this doesn't usually happen to me, so this is hilariously ironic. 😂 E for Effort. A for Intention. Also, the fake accents he used.. what..

Len Scheff has described a path--not an easy one, but a simple one--by which we may move from the gritty and painful drudgery of anger to an elevated freedom. He uses pithy examples and fun stories, but also delves deeply into ancient wisdom, to explain how we can free ourselves from the destructive force of anger--at others and at ourselves. This is a book any driven person--any lawyer, any professional, anybody--should read and comprehend and, as a result, become truly alive.

Spy: The Funny Years, by Graydon Carter Kurt Andersen

From Publishers Weekly

With equal parts nostalgia and snarkiness, this history /anthology celebrates the now legendary satirical magazine during its heyday—aka 1986 to 1991, when founders and partners Andersen (Turn of the Century and host of [PRI's] Studio 360) and Carter (editor of Vanity Fair) ran the show (the magazine folded as a monthly in 1994). "We were very lucky to catch two waves—the post-'60s ironic mood and the go-go financial mood," observes Andersen, and these pages offer plenty of opportunity to travel back to those heady days of "Separated at Birth?" and "The Spy Guide to Postmodern Everything." Those who wondered what life at Spy was really like will also be rewarded: former deputy editor Kalogerakis [...] has collected plenty of stories about minuscule paychecks, ridiculously tight budgets and bacchanalian parties (Andersen and Carter chime in with extensive annotations). Certain to be on the holiday wish lists of aging hipsters. (Nov.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The type remains tiny. You'll wind up needing a fistful of non-prescription anti-inflammatories to remedy the crick in your neck after following the flow charts. And on occasion you'll lower the book, stare at the New Yorker print that's certainly on your wall and think: He was merely a short-fingered vulgarian in 1988. And now he's the "leader" of the free world. Still, at least one last time you should revel in "My Kid Could Do That," David Halbfinger's letters to the editor and ads for the Puck Building ballroom, "still the greatest place to have a party" -- and now owned by the Kushners. Sigh.

I expected a volume of selected articles and instead found that this book is a history of the magazine. I guess it's fine for people who want to know what this or that editor said one day, or how a magazine is published, but it bored me to tears. I was hoping to read articles that made the magazine memorable, not stories of the day to day lives of authors and editors. Not my cup of tea.

Funny, funny. funny!

I have several piles of old SPY magazine back issues around my house, so I suppose I am part of the ideal audience for this book, "SPY: The Funny Years." It contains a generous sampling of classic SPY articles that I recognized, as well as a few that I missed from the first few issues when I guess it wasn't very available outside New York City. The book also features a detailed history of the magazine written by former editor George Kalogerakis with notes and commentary by co-founders Graydon Carter and Kurt Andersen. You ask, "why should I buy a big, sort of expensive book about a magazine from twenty years ago?" Well, first because this book is funny as hell. Two of the first pitches of SPY were "The New Yorker crossed with the National Enquirer and David Letterman", or "MAD Magazine for grown-ups", and those are pretty good descriptions. The famous article about the Bohemian Grove is reprinted here in full, as well as Paul Rudnick and Kurt Andersen's "The Irony Epidemic" (perhaps the quintessential SPY piece), and Joe Eszterhas' flame-thrower letter to Mike Ovitz (with annotations.) The best SPY articles produced belly-laughs and cool investigative journalism at the same time. The history of the magazine included in this volume might seem a little inside to those who aren't already fans, but if you read it you will learn why SPY was probably the most influential magazine of the last twenty years, certainly since the heyday of the National Lampoon. SPY was reviewing other reviewers before blogs were even thought of, and its brand of radical skepticism towards all things media has been ripped off by VH1, E!, and every other pop culture outfit you can name. Only SPY was smart. I think I got a post-graduate education of sorts from my reading of erudite pieces like the satiric explanation of post-modernism reprinted here. (SPY was the first place I had ever heard of post-modernism, which tells you either how smart it was or how sheltered I was at the time.) Each issue demanded a lot from the reader, which is probably why it wasn't long for this world. (In a just universe, SPY would still be going strong and be universally recognized for inventing "reality" entertainment, for good and ill.)Co-founders Carter and Andersen have gone on to become solid members of the media establishment (and some would say that "Vanity Fair" editor Carter has become what he once mocked.) Old issues of SPY are avidly sought after on eBay. And "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" try to emulate SPY, not realizing that the old magazine didn't have a political agenda: it made fun of everybody. This book is a valuable keepsake for admirers of the magazine and a good introduction for those who are yet unfamiliar but are curious about the legend. Man, I sure do miss it.

Maybe the days of funny print are over but if so this book tells the tale of the glory years when Spy mag ruled the world. Some of it is dated, sure, it was of its time, but as an avid reader when it was kicking this is a glorious journey back in time. Plus it looks great. A must for short fingered vulgarians everywhere.

The greatest magazine of my youth is reprised here in book form! Anyone familiar with how wonderful and fascinating Spy magazine was back in the late 1980's should read this one. Spy broke new ground in "funny" and "ballsy" in the pre-internet age of media. Quite funny and well worth the time, though anyone not familiar with Spy probably won't get much out of it.Highly recommended for former Spy readers!

I loved Spy. I remember one issue that had autopsy reports on Jim Croce and someone else, in tiny print, in the margins. This was an outstanding magazine, too far ahead of its time to succeed. Hell, it wouldn't succeed now; way too much narcissism today for anyone to find humor in it. This book is a great tribute to a great magazine.Did anyone ever win the prize for the errors on the cover?

I thought this book would be fascinating, but it's kinda of boring. SO unlike the original magazine. THere is a lot ofwriting, but the design is so thoughtful, pretending to be chic, it's rather hard to read. The type is so small. I couldn't get though it.
