He moves on to the most popular creation stories. Clayton next weaves together how the gods and humans came to interact with each other.In Part Two the author zeroes in on the darker sides of Egyptian religion discussing gods who inflicted chaos upon the world, specifically Apep the snake, and Seth the god of war and confusion. Part Three is the section focusing on what we know of the history of Egypt and the mortals who interacted with the gods to change it. Since I was a youngster I have been fascinated with Ancient Egyptian mythology, hieroglyphics, history, photographs and art. The first room I would want to visit at the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) was the Egyptian (although in recent years I do believe some of the artifacts should be returned to Egypt but that's a personal point of view). I have watched so many documentaries and movies pertaining to Egypt. When I saw this book I was thrilled and thought this is going to be great, however I was somewhat disappointed in the work. The parts about the myths, legends and etc was interesting but overall the work read like a book report, therefore sadly I have to admit I did not enjoy it. I think I would have given an extra point if the author had listed some sources for where the information he used came from, I am ever the skeptic.

Based on our current understanding of human history Egypt is one of mankind's first civilizations. Understanding a civilization's religion and history can help provide an understanding of how the ancients'viewed their world and the influnce it has on todays' world. This book focuses on the gods, monsters, and mortals of ancient Egypt thereby.helping the reader gain insight into the people and culture of their ancient society. The author details the gods of Egypt, the most powerful of which was Ra the creator and sun god and the eight original gods of Egypt that were created out of chaos and than moved to the high heavens. Four Egyptian gods actually lived among the people for many years and had important influnce over daily life. They were Osirirus, Isis, Seth, and Horus and the mythology surrounding them is extremly interesting and colorful. The only true Eqyptian monstor was a gigantic serpant of chaos, known as Apep or Apophus. The gods, primarily Ra fought daily battles to keep chaos in check, which speaks volumns regarding the desire for order in ancient Egypt. The author discusses a number of mortals who deeply influnced Egyptian culture. My favorite was Ramses II, also know as The Great and King of Kings who served as Pharaoh for 57 years, and died at the age of 93. I think that many readers will enjoy reading this well written study of Ancient Egypt because its heritage remains vital to the understanding of who we are as a species.
