I really like this little book for teaching hands how to pivot or make shapes or just learn an easy first time project. It's a little thin, which was disappointing. I was hoping there was more to it. However, there is plenty to get you or your child started. I don't know how to sew but this little book helped me a lot! I am now teaching my kids how to sew with our machine and its going well. The book has some patterns you can cut out too. You can make a simple skirt, a stuffed dog, or even an ipod pouch. It's a good book. I just wish there was more to it.
I bought this because my daughter, 6, asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. I have never used a sewing machine myself so I thought this book would be great for both of us to look through as we learned how to sew. I wanted to love this book but after reading through it, it is just ok, and I don't think it is worth the money. After reading through the book, I didn't feel like it helped us learn how to sew very much. I found looking at YouTube videos much more beneficial, and that is free :/.
I bought this for my daughter, who is extremely crafty, to go along with her sewing machine. The book gives a wonderful, easy-to-follow breakdown of how to properly use a sewing machine. The pictures are beautifully detailed, and my daughter had no problem understanding things like how to thread the bobbin and measure fabrics. There are a variety of templates, patterns, project ideas, and instructions on how to go about creating them. Her favorite creations were a tote bag and a pencil case. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a young girl, or boy, in their life that loves to express themselves through arts and crafts.
This is a great book for beginners. It is very informative and easy to read. My daughter is ten years old and just received her first sewing machine. This book explained all the basics of the machine and was filled with sewing steps in language that she could relate to. She practiced for two days with the paper exercises in this book. We simply made copies and she set there for hours learning how to control her foot pedal, raise and lower her presser foot and pivot properly. I would highly recommend it for any beginner.
Our ten year old received this book and a sewing machine for Christmas. She was able to use the instructions in here to create a couple of tote bags and pillows so far. It includes specific and precise lists of necessary supplies for each project (always helpful) and step by step guidance on what to do. It also has some practice patterns to practice things like lock stitches, straight stitches, curved stitches, turning corners, etc.
Excellent and well laid out! Teaches basics and moves upward, highly recommend. I'd even use this to teach an adult who feels overwhelmed!
This is an excellent book which I much prefer to a DVD;I bought it to go along with the new Brother Sewing Machine which I purchased for my granddaughter for Christmas. She reads very well, and has been wanting to sew on my machine since last summer. She is only six, but we will take it slowly, step by step. I purchased material, thread, etc. for her as well. I also plan to cut out some felt hand puppets for her to sew at first. This book explains the parts of a sewing machine, and has simple projects to begin with. As a retired teacher, I highly recommend this book.
Really not a beginner sewing machine book. Text is pretty dense, and projects are more advanced. It is very slim and not very substantial. Was looking for something engaging and very easy for my 7-year-old... returning this and looking for something new.
Good basic book. Note that this is a VERY short book. It gives a great overview and isn't intimidating to younger girls. It was the perfect book for a 9 year old. But it would be much too simple for a girl that is 12 or older.I liked how simply the author explains everything. I feel that it covers even some more complex topics in a great way. I am very glad that we bought this book to go along with the new machine that we bought.
