I ordered this to share with a couple of gifted teens that were struggling. I found that while there were some broad generalizations made by the author that don't really apply to many gifted teens, it offered some good subjects for discussion amongst our little group. I would recommend this book to parents and teens that are finding the social and interpersonal aspects of being gifted a challenge.
My gifted teen daughter found a lot to like in this book. When kids are gifted it can be so hard for them to understand why it's difficult to connect with other kids their age at times. This book really gave her a lot of encouragement and understanding about her giftedness and how that relates to the world around her.
I just got my master's in GT. Why we didn't read this book in my coursework is beyond me! I had been disappointed by the companion to this book for kids under 10 but this book was GREAT. I teach for International Connections Academy and we will be using this book for our Affective Education program for our middle schoolers. The authors did a great job of making it interesting to read for adults and teens. I found the chapters to be well organized and the information grouped together nicely.
This updated version of the survival guide came out just when I needed it. I have always felt the guide was the best resource out there for gifted students and teachers both. I had just commented to a colleague that I wished there were a new version out because the older one was beginning to seem a little dated. I was so pleased to see that this edition had just come out. This book is a "must have" for all secondary gifted instructors and their students.
This is an excellent book, and very appropriate for actual teens. I am using it with pre-teens and found a few things too disturbing to use in the last chapter (why describe how some depressed teens committed suicide?!) I'm still going to use the books, but will cut out the last chapter.
I'm not a huge fan of non-academic curriculum, but we were required to develop one, and if you have to do it, this book is a good resource for that. The one for younger kids is great as well.
I find this guide to be very useful for my Gifted/Talented students, who oftentimes don't understand how different they are from average students.
Bought for my daughter. She started reading on Christmas and is already taking notes! She love it.
