I’ve taught bridge for about 15 years. This is now the book I teach from. It’s a better value than the ACBL series or the Audrey Grant series, both of which require multiple books in a series to cover the same material that Kantar covers in this one book. (I don’t teach the material in the order Kantar presents it because I find students want to learn bidding and play simultaneously, an approach that enables them to (sort of) play bridge as they are learning it.) One major drawback is that the book has no "test yourself" quizzes of the sort that are really essential to learning basic bridge (and are included in the ACBL and Audrey Grant books). I supply that deficiency in the courses I teach with quizzes I created.Some may be curious about changes in the fourth edition as compared to the third. They are extremely minor. Other than layout changes throughout and wording changes here and there, I noticed about 5 changes. They are:1. The choice of minor to open with 4-4 minors in a balanced hand out of range for notrump. The third edition recommends 1D for all such hands. The fourth recommends 1D for 4441 (unless the singleton is in diamonds, obviously), and the *better* minor for 4432 hands.2. There is now a suit-quality requirement for a positive response to a 2C opening. In the third edition the requirement was simply 7+HCP plus any 5-card or longer suit.3. In one place Kantar suggests that a 1NT response to a 1C opening shows 8-10 HCP, but the main section on responses to 1C preserves the 6-10 range of the third edition.4. Kantar now includes criteria for opening 1 of a major rather than 1NT with a 15-17 HCP 5332.5. Kantar explains leading K from AK doubleton.(One new oddity in the fourth edition: In addition to its normal copyright notice on the verso of the book’s title page, the publisher adds a copyright notice after each hand or deal diagram. Why?)

Early impression, as I have only read 25% of the book so far! The trouble with most Bridge books and online guides is that they tell you what to do without giving any reason why. I had hoped a Dummies book would explain why, and not expect me to figure it out for myself. Certainly, some explanations are given in this book. But, far too often, the standard "just trust me" advice is presented. Maybe I'm dumber than most dummies, but I'm totally lost on the concept of "extra winners." For some reason, discarding from other suits is far preferable to playing a useless card from the suit led??? In Chapter 7, advice is given to establish a side suit before pulling trumps. In most cases, I find that dangerous, but the reasoning for establishing a side suit first is never discussed (maybe later?). Getting best advantage from a 5 or 6 card side suit is discussed, and it is declared without explanation that this only works if it's in the dummy. I could use some more explanation if I am ever to be a creative and intelligent player, instead of a recipe memoriser.

I joined a Bridge Club after not playing for 25+ years. I taught Beginner Bridge in years past but remembered almost nothing...this book got me back to speed in a few hours. I enjoy playing...and can honestly say this book is money well spent.

I have started a number of beginning bridge books only to have to wade through pages and pages about bidding. This book was different. It did an excellent job of teaching card play and bidding. When I get a book to learn how to improve at a game I don't want to have to finish the whole book before I can apply anything that I have read. With this book you can read some and use what you have learned right away. I wish I had found this book first.

A very comprehensive book for beginners. Well-written but far from succinct. Lots of humor and personal accounts that include big names like Jacoby and Stayman. The biggest problem is that it provides so much information but no real summaries at the end of each chapter to allow for testing your knowledge or for easier reference on rereads.

As a new beginner of Bridge I was finding it a bit daunting, however this book explains it in such basic terms without all the jargon it is much easier to absorb. Hopefully when I am more proficient I can then learn the terminology. Each longterm player I have talked with admits it is a hard game to learn because of all the facets, but with Bridge for dummies I am hoping that the journey will be made more simple.Thank you for your efficiency in getting this book to me in Australia.

We bought this for a friend who has never played bridge. I read it first, and I found it to be very well organized and logical.

These cards suited my purpose well. I have about a month before my GRE general exam but I gave myself 5 days to work through this entire box so I would learn them all before I had a chance to get bored and before my summer course started and I had other things on my mind. That's 100 cards a day, which is quite a few but, by going through each set, setting aside the words I already knew, and then drilling myself on the remainder, I learned them all and learned them well! So lets evaluate the cards themselves...1) Physical Quality of Cards: The cards are each 3 1/4" x 2 1/8". This was a good size for me, not too small to read but still portable. They are made of a thin but glossy (not matte) paper. They are definitely sturdier and easier to use than cards made from writing paper but don't expect them to be cut from a stiff cardstock. The only time the quality of the cards was an issue for me was when I accidentally splashed a few drops of water onto some of them. Water, I discovered, will cause them to almost immediately warp. However, I wiped them off right away and then put them back in the box where they fit in snuggly with the other cards so that they dried completely flat. Also, because the cards are thin, sometimes static causes them to cling to each other and it's easy to accidentally pick up two cards rather than one and not notice until you see that the definition on the back doesn't belong to the word on the front.2) Effectiveness of Wordlist: On practice GRE tests, etc, I have seen many of the words in this box (eg. desultory) but also many other words that were not in the box. After I learned all of these, I began supplementing my vocabulary study with additional wordlists. For example, the Barrons word list of high frequency GRE words has 300 words more than Kaplan. Also, I was tipped off by a fellow GRE testtaker to freerice (dot com), where you can improve your vocabulary and donate rice through the UN World Food Program at the same time.3) Accuracy of Given Definitions: I often needed more than the given definition to fully understand the meaning of words that were completely new to me and to understand how they are typically used. For example, I learned the word meretricious from this box, where the definition was given as "falsely attractive". I was a little shocked therefore when I came across this word elsewhere defined as meaning "like or relating to a prostitute". I'd like to know in advance if I'm going to use a word that means that. While another dictionary definition of meretricious is "insincere, based on deception or pretense; showy in a cheap, inappropriate way", it's origin is definitely truer to the former meaning. It comes from the word, Meretrix, meaning harlot. I worked through some of these cards with a friend and we came across additional cards where the given definitions were very narrow or otherwise somewhat questionable. So, don't rely solely on the definitions given. It's easy enough to google any word (eg. define: meretricious) to see multiple definitions and get a better idea of the way it is actually used. Furthermore, the more you engage with the vocabulary, the better you will learn it.4)Quality of Sentences: Together with the other information provided on the back of the cards, the sentences did help me to both remember the meaning of each word and understand how it is used. No complaints here.Ex. Calumny - The unscrupulous politician used _calumny_ to bring down his opponent in the senatorial race.5)Accuracy of Provided Synonyms: On each card, there is a list of "synonyms", however these are sometimes better thought of as families of related words. For example, according to the Kaplan cards, these words are equal in meaning...languid = weakdesultory = unplannedwinsome = attractivelampoon = teaseattenuate = water (not water down)andlargess = present.6)Accuracy of Provided Pronunciations and Elements of Speech: Most of the time the pronunciation was correct and useful. I recall that there were at least a couple of cards where the wrong syllable was emphasized (underlined)...I checked these with a dictionary and found that, if I had trusted the cards, my pronunciation would have been incorrect. You can sound as goofy as you like however and still get a 800 on the verbal reasoning section of the GRE since pronunciation is not tested there. In the provided 'Elements of Speech' categorizations (is it a noun, verb, adjective, etc.), I didn't notice any errors.7) The box: I really like the box that the cards came in. The set is a very compact portable size, the box itself and the lid are made of an extremely sturdy/hard and high quality glossy blue and green cardstock (image provided is accurate), and it holds the cards snugly so they don't easily fall out. It would be nice if they sold blank index cards (of the same petite size) in boxes like this...In the end, I just wish there were a second set of cards, Kaplan GRE Vocabulary Exam in a Box II...but I'll have to make my own in order to continue preparing for the GRE general test and expanding my vocabulary. I also would really appreciate more help with analogies. If they added an analogy question to each card that used the relevant word (and another, of course), that would be just perfect. The letter of the correct answer could be on the front...Advice for fellow GRE General test-takers: Don't rely on one company and, instead of paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for GRE prep courses, spend a small portion of that on GRE materials that target your areas of weakness (take a diagnostic practice test early on!). There are lots of materials available for self-study and, of course, you can do self-study, that's why you're applying to graduate school! :-) Hope this review was helpful...Good luck everyone!

Your score on the verbal section is ultimately going to be determined by how well you know the words used in it. And the only way you can improve your score is to broaden your vocabulary.I would say that the vocab in this box falls into three different categories:Category 1: Everyday words that you use frequently, such as: Lavish, Livid and Malleable.Category 2: Words you may not ever use, but you do see used in magazines like The New Yorker, and you may not know the exact definition: Efficacy, Obsequious and Sanguine.Category 3: Words you've never heard of: Zephyr, Coterie and Inchoate.On the GRE test I found that most of the words you needed to know where in category 1 and 2. Nothing in category 3 was touched, and it's not surprising since you have to come up with convoluted sentences or analogies to use them. Zephyr means "a gentle breeze; something airy or unsubstantial"; Coterie is "an intimate group of persons with a similar purpose," such as a clique.I would say that about 200 words in the box fall into category 1, and the remaining 300 are split between categories 2 and 3. I would give the box 5/5 stars, but there were just too many pathetically easy words in it -- I was paying for a lot of cards I immediately put aside.So did the flash cards help me? I think so. As can be expected, not all of the words on the test were in the box , but there were definitely words I learned that did appear.After I bought this box I found out that you can get it in electronic form as an iPhone app. So before buying this, you should see if you think the app will better fit your study habits.

I scored a 530 previously. I am bad with vocabulary and have a poor memory. I crammed these words in for about 1-2 hours a day for a week. I scored a 600. (I probably remembered about 1/2 of the words in the box.)My boyfriend scored a 560 previously. He has a decent vocabulary but an excellent memory. He crammed in for a day (mostly at night and the next morning). He scored a 730. (He probably remembered about 2/3 of the words in the box.)You will be surprised how many of the words from this box show up on the exam. It is definitely a worthwhile investment, for those who need to learn vocabulary words (such as me) or review vocabulary words (such as my boyfriend). We are both mathematics majors and do very little reading outside of our field, although we are both smart. If you put time into learning these words, you will do well on the Verbal section of the GRE.

Dear me. I like our governor and was interested to learn more about him but ick. Some of it was funny and clever and some of his observations like the bit on the Sand Creek massacre were very good and much was interesting. But a lot of it was....over the top. Honestly, I don't want to know when the governor of Colorado lost his virginity, or how many romantic conquests he made or how he sneaks his girlfriend home at night. I don't want to know this stuff. Perhaps the person I most identified with in the book was his mother who seems to have seen him clearly. I am left with the idea of a son of the Main Line trying to act like a shucky darn George Bailey and not quite carrying it off. Maudlin.

"Woe is me" says it all, especially when one has the "Getty-Up" that Hickenlooper has had. This is a story like those prospectors of Colorado's past, only this story is a search that blossom in politics not the riches of gold, silver or oil. What a gift Coloradans have gotten along the way.This is a "page turner" for sure not your typical political biography. This is a story of a young, mildly dyslexic, big thinker who is still making his mark and destined for even bigger things in the future.

As a former citizen of Coloradan who still considers Colorado as home, I loved the identification with my home state. This is a satisfying book with many interesting anecdotes, but I wish there had been a little less about his formative years and more about being a public official. He's been remarkably successful at working across party lines, but I'm not sure I got the whole story. Would love to know more.

John Hickenlooker is a really interesting individual, and this book gives you some insight into who he is. Colorado is exceedingly fortunate to have him as governor. This book tells a lot about him, but also about the system. It's an entertaining read, until the last few chapters of lists of accomplishments. I'd be delighted to see him in Hilary Clinton's cabinet. but even more pleased to have him continuing to benefit Colorado.

I found out so many things about Gov. Hickenlooper's life and background. Even though I've met him on several occasions, I now feel that I know him. The book is a timeline of recent events in Colorado history. It is well written and ofttimes humorous. I would recommend it to all ages but especially high school kids interested in how government and politics are intertwined. I'm so happy that he will be our Governor for a few more years. Colorado is lucky to have him.

Get a jump on your political junkie friends and read this funny account of life and thoughts of Colorado Governor and progressive pragmatist John Hickenlooper. He could be the next President all the country craves. Self effacing, practical, idealistic, entrepreneurial, adaptive and almost the opposite of the self aggrandizing bozo in office now.

I saw the author on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Because he seemed so level headed in contrast to the crazies in politics, and because my son just moved to Colorado Springs, I wanted to learn more about the Governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper. This book tells the story of his rise from 10 year college student to the office of Governor.It is a human story and a fascinating political story of overcoming obstacles and using inclusive collaboration to secure one's aims. The "opposite of woe" is revealed to be "giddyup!". A very timely lesson for 2016!

I'm from Denver and met John Hickenlooper before he started in politics. The book could have been better written, but you can't help liking the guy.
