. . . promises well-drawn characters embroiled in a clash of cultures as in the 9th Century England the Danes increase their invasions of the vulnerable, divided country of Saxon Uhtred, second son of not-so-beloved Earl Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Bamburg Castle, Northumbria). The story spans roughly the second decade of Uhtred’s life as he moves through the events that destroy his family, remove him from his rightful heritage, and change him from reluctant Christian to happier Dane to blissful Saxon again. He survives a battle at age 12, murderous treachery of his uncle at age 16, and eventually enters service to King Alfred, the Saxon kind of Wessex, as the other Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia fall to the Danish invasion. Readers will enjoy immersion into both Saxon and Danish cultures, appreciating the contrasts in values. Readers will enjoy the relationships Uhtred establishes with Ragnar, with Brida his companion, then with the Saxon king Alfred. The surprises are there, for Uhtred, for Alfred, and for the reader. Readers will, more than anything, enjoy Cornwell’s depiction of everyday 9th Century life, of his characters and their depths, and, especially the astounding battle scenes, all the while appreciating Uhtred’s awareness of the foolishness of some of his youthful decisions and the hazards he risks his life with, often unnecessarily. We especially admire the complexity of our human predecessors’ lives as Cornwell presents them, fulfilling the promises of the Prologue with a great story.

I'm still in the glow of living vicariously in Uhtred's world. I can't begin to tell exactly why this story affected me so deeply, except to say that the author did everything right. He lost no time making me care about the main character, just a child at the beginning of the story. Within the first dozen pages, I was hooked, invested in the story--wanting to know more, and needing to know young Uhtred's fate. The narration is first person, and occasionally, throughout the story, the narrator intrudes, addressing the reader directly. While in some books, this doesn't work, in The Last Kingdom, it worked so well, I anticipated when it would happen, and I looked forward to it. Each time, it upped the tension just a knot. Another thing that worked incredibly well was that this entire book is told by Uhtred as an old man, sharing the tale of his life, looking back on events--An incredibly entertaining stroll through 9th century, English history mingled with a few fictional characters. Outstanding read.

Great story of Vikings invading what will be a future England. It was such a pleasure to read a book with pieces of real history, real people and real places, in it. I loved the fact that author did not try to make a fictional main character, Uthred, a contemporary humanitarian but gave him a perky, mischievous and often cruel personality fitting the Viking image. I also loved the sense of humor, although, most of the time it was a black humor. But I could not help laughing while reading about, otherwise tragic, end of Prince Edmund. There is a lot of carnage in this book (after all it is a book about a war) but only some of the gruesome details are described, so reader is not swamped with too many horror images. The reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 are: 1) Too many battles. It may be a plus for other readers but once I read about fighting in “shield wall” I did not need to read about it again and again. 2) I had problem placing many people with similar-sounding names starting with “ash” and figuring out how they are related. There is actually a map at the beginning at the book and list of places and names but I missed it since my kindle opened on first chapter and I just started reading. So my advise to readers is; do not miss map and list, they are very helpful.I liked very much author’s Amazon web page that, by itself, is a great story told with a great humor.I think I will try next a book from different series by this author (hoping for fewer battles).

I love reading epic fantasy, most especially when the story is somewhat based on history. My inclination to read this book is due to the TV series. My interest is piqued to find out more about the life of the male protagonist, Uthred, since the TV adaptation covers only the best highlights of the story. This book entails the life of Uthred at age 10 to 20 during the war of Danes and England around 866 to 877 A.D. The POV is from Uthred himself. The story has developed and progressed the way I have expected it to be...in chronological order since it is based on history. The names of places and characters are a bit hard for me to pronounce or even remember, and so I have jotted them down (like Alfred who is constantly writing, LOL) for reference in my future reading. I have enjoyed reading this book. I am excited to read the next installment and find out more of Uthred's destiny.

“The Last Kingdom” is fun and easy-to-read, well-written and brings to life King Alfred’s battles with the Vikings. Much of this book parallels the TV series "The Vikings." I would recommend this book for the young adult crowd who has enjoyed the “Harry Potter” series. For serious readers of historical fiction, however, I would suggest they look elsewhere. The language, style and subject matter are designed for a sixteen year-old male readership; there are no feminine voices in the novel; and the treatment of history is superficial.

Review

In an age awash with easy believism, we need voices like Paul Washer's that remind us of The Gospel Call and True Conversion. We are all tempted to believe that we are beyond the basics and in need of something more something new. However, Washer reminds us that there is nothing more important and more relevant than getting the gospel right, making the gospel clear, and trusting that gospel to do its work of calling, saving, and securing a people to God and for God. Praise God for the gospel and books like this that help us know, understand, and love it more deeply. --Voddie Baucham, pastor of preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas, and author of The Ever-Loving TruthBeing a Christian is not just a matter of making a decision for Jesus or turning over a new leaf. It is a miracle of grace in which a sinner is brought by God's power from death to life. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer brilliantly and clearly helps the reader understand that truth, carefully opening the Scriptures and explaining how the power of the gospel ought to impact our lives as Christians. A much-needed, pastoral, and challenging book! --Greg Gilbert, senior pastor of Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and author of What Is the Gospel?By God's sovereign grace, Paul Washer's ministry has been particularly blessed to instruct this generation in the basics of true conversion and the gospel call. I highly commend this careful but simple treatment of these vital issues. May God bless it to the preparation of His people to share the gospel of peace and to the salvation of many persons. --Sam Waldron, academic dean and professor of systematic theology at the Midwest Center for Theological Studies, Owensboro, Kentucky

From the Inside Flap

The apostle Paul gave the gospel the first place in his preaching, endeavored with all his might to proclaim it clearly, and even went so far as to pronounce a curse upon all those who would pervert its truth. Yet how sad it is that many, even among those considering themselves evangelicals, have reduced the gospel message to a few trite statements to be repeated, and view conversion as a mere human decision. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer challenges such easy believism as he examines the real meaning of things like faith, repentance, and receiving Christ. He also deals extensively with the effects of saving grace that God promises in the new covenant; namely, the creation of new hearts and new people. "In an age awash with easy believism, we need voices like Paul Washer's that remind us of The Gospel Call and True Conversion. We are all tempted to believe that we are 'beyond the basics' and in need of something more something new. I struggled with how many stars to give this book. As for truth, it is a 5 star book. This book has in many ways been a blessing to me. Paul Washer quotes and references so many scriptures to provide evidence that what he is stating is true. I have struggled for many years believing these truths while having many people in my life, including pastors, telling me that I am wrong. Thankfully, the Lord has sustained me, continued to open my eyes and has not allowed me to believe a "watered down" gospel. With all of that said, Paul Washer does not tell like minded believers what to do with regards to church. I live in a large city in the northwest, and have visited countless churches in my area. All of these churches struggle with what Paul Washer accurately states is the problem with most evangelical churches in the U.S. Case in point is the church I have been attending. The pastor states in his sermon that he would rather have a church of 10 people following Jesus than a big mega church, and the church is not about a building, it is about the people. I totally agree with these statements. Unfortunately, the pastor and leaders of the church speak differently with their actions. They are spending over 7 million dollars purchasing and remodeling the existing church building - which I thought was quite nice and adequate. At a different sermon, the pastor admonished people for not giving generously to the church building, and that was after stating that the congregation gave 5 million dollars. This is a church of 500 people! I was really hoping that Paul Washer would provide some wisdom for those of us unable to find a like minded church. In addition, I wish his ministry, Heart Cry, would look into planting churches in large cities in our own country. We really need them. I struggle with knowing whether I should just give up going to church or go to a church where the gospel is not accurately presented.

Just a young man trying to learn the Gospel all around and correctly. This 3 book series has been a great help & it’s such a great comfort that when I go to read the scriptures these truths are backed overwhelmingly. Paul Washer is trustworthy and constantly quotes from the Bible his points in this book

Christians must return to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything else is idolatry. So many are being deceived today. The points made by Paul Washer need to be proclaimed everywhere.

Everyone needs to read this. What the church has drifted from in these last days. Why so few will be saved. Not a work of man but of God.

Paul Washer has done it again. This time in written format. He speaks straight truth that the church today tends to disregard and brush over. Washer is intentional in portraying the truth. I just got done study the book, reading 2 chapters of the book and visiting the numerous scripture verses he uses to back up everything he says. You'll find yourself highlighting almost every word and then bouncing back and forth between scripture and Washer's book to saturate yourself in the Word of God.

Great

Paul Washer does a incredible job in presenting the true Gospel and how it should apply to the believers life. He speaks on common misconceptions and believes the church has today and how believers should act on their faith. If you are looking for a book with powerful scripture and the promises of God, this is the book for you!

One of the best looks at Christianity in a world of easy Christian-ease. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to challenge themselves in this world of slap happy churches.

When you are a young teenager when someone does something to embarrass you, you just cannot forget it. It can change your whole life. When a 14 year old is sent away to boarding school because of a vicious prank played on her, her life is changed. She grows up to be successful in her work but not so much in her love life. She happens to run into the irresponsible teen boy who embarrassed her so deeply and sets out to get back at him. But she finds that they both grew up and changed. Interesting treatment of how when we try to get even with someone for a slight it can backfire on us. The conclusion is not expected.

I have a hard time not completing a book I’ve started but wish I would have quit reading this one. Very hard to read people being so repeatedly stupid. Total waste of my time.

NOTHING was funny about this story. Very little was believable. All in all, best to avoid.

This was probably the most ridiculous, least realistic book I have read in my life. No relationship could possibly succeed with major rifts occurring every day. And the behavior of the ex-girlfriend, I know it’s fiction but not fantasy. It reminds me of something a 3rd grader would write, if I could give it a zero, I would. I could not even finish it, and I rarely put a book down.

Not funny, immature, predictable, and a huge waste. I can't wait to delete this trash. I actually paid real money for this.

This is the second time I have read this book, It is so good. Billy Havenwood pulls a childish prank on Christian in High School and it changes her life. Years later Christina sees Bill and she decides that she is going to get her revenge on him for what he did to her in high school. Bill has been cut off from his father and that can't happen because it will destroy his plans. Telling his father that he is getting married the only name that he can think of is Christian. Christina agrees to go along with his scene for his father. The plans of there own are working perfectly until they both develop feelings for one another. The thinks that happen in this book will make you laugh out loud !! What happens when Christian's plan blows up in her face ? Can they make there way back to one another or is too much damage been done to each other ?

Her Perfect Revenge by Anna Mara is a really fun read. I love the interaction between Christina and Bill, and also William. The characters are interesting, charming and flawed. The storyline is compelling and keeps you guessing. The only thing that really annoyed me was the nicknames Bill and Christina give each other. I just can’t deal with people calling each other “honey bunny” and the like. It was bad enough when they were using such cringe-worthy nicknames to convince others they were in love, and even worse when they were using it for real. The dialogue throughout the book is brilliantly done, except during the period Bill and Christina are in a relationship for real, which is such a shame. The brief period the reader gets to see them in a relationship is, disappointingly, the worst part of the book. The cat and mouse phase is much more interesting and satisfying – their chemistry and interaction during this time is magic.I started reading Her Perfect Revenge right after finishing Mara's other novel, Why Romeo Hates Juliet. I liked Mara’s writing style and unconventional plot structure. However, upon finishing Her Perfect Revenge, I find myself a little disappointed that the basic premise was basically copied for the two books: Hero and heroine play each other, both are initially too stubborn to admit their true feelings for each other and a love-hate relationship unfolds. About 80% into the book they finally admit their feelings for each other and experience a few days of romantic bliss. Then the heroine messes everything up and the relationship comes to a screeching halt. The hero and heroine both fall into a state of depression but refuse to communicate with each other. Over a year passes before they meet again, the truth about the reasons behind their failed relationship comes out and they reconcile. The first time I read this plot construction I thought it was fresh and refreshing; however, I will think twice before reading another of Mara’s books, as it seems she’s just sticking to this one basic construction. I sincerely hope she finds a way to give her next book an unpredictable plot structure.Overall I enjoyed this book as much as I did Why Romeo Hates Juliet, I just wish it didn't follow the same basic plot structure.flag

I love the romance and comedy, the problems, and solutions, and the twist. But I was wondering... What happened to Stephie? You know what, never mind. She probably died was and alone! Oh, and, BTW for all you readers, Stephie is the evil girlfriend! So many secrets, but I can't tell you them all! 😉

This book was OK - nothing great but not really bad. The story involves Christina, who was bullied and harrassed in high school by Bill. She meets up with him years later and decides to exact revenge. This was billed as a "laugh out loud romantic comedy." It wasn't really a comedy at all to me. Bill and his friend, Jake, have serious problems with alcohol abuse. Christina can't seem to get past her teen years involving the bullying situation. Even as she meets Bill later, she can't see what he has become as an adult. These are all serious issues! The money Bill's family had made some parts of the story unrealistic. Were they really unconcerned when she lost the engagement "rock?" When Christina moved into Bill's family home - that didn't ring true, either.Fair story - not really a laugh-out-loud story, though!

After a few years of exploring Christianity, having been introduced to Christianity by Mennonites and Evangelicals, pretending to be a Presbyterian for a while, flirting a little with Orthodoxy and even less with Catholicism, I finally found a church home with the Anglicans last year and have since been confirmed as an Anglican. One of the beautiful things about Anglicanism is The Book of Common Prayer which I have fallen in love with and use for personal daily prayer. As other reviewers have noted (somewhat angrily) this book is not The Book of Common Prayer. Anyone who has read the product description, though, is already aware of this. It has many characteristics of The Book of Common Prayer though. There are outlines for Evening and Noonday prayer, but rather than having a simple rubric for Morning Prayer the book is filled with individual devotionals for each day of the year. So, for those who are familiar with both the Anglican Book of Common Prayer and those evangelical devotionals with a thought/meditation/prayer/reading/all-or-some-of-the-above, it might be helpful to think of this as something in between.Perhaps it is not fair of me to write this review as I have certainly not read the entirety of the book (and I probably won't be done until a year from now--that's how the book works), but I will do my best to provide a review of what I have read of it.The introduction is pretty good. It won't provide the depth of history behind liturgy that people who have already fallen in love with, studied, and practice liturgy would like. It is exactly what it claims to be--an introduction and nothing more. It seems that the intended audience is more those that are unfamiliar with liturgy than those who are familiar with it. It is what you would expect from the New Monastics in its critical attitude toward government and the idea of serving the Kingdom of God being mutually exclusive of serving the nations of this world. The point of being ecumenical is stressed over and over. It doesn't give a very complete history of liturgical prayer. Rather it just stresses that liturgy is a big part of the church's history. As the unhappy Anglican/Episcopal reviewers have mentioned, Thomas Cranmer is not even mentioned. The Morning Prayers are pretty sweet. For those of you who are used to a tradition that uses liturgy, you'll either feel comfortable because of the way it seems sort of like what you use or you'll feel a bit uneasy about how it seems almost like it but not quite. I swung back and forth between those feelings reading the first nine days of morning prayers to get caught up. Aside from the liturgical aspect, the stories and quotes inserted about saints/heroes of Christianity are awesome. Great short little stories about amazing people. I really like this about this book. One criticism I have about the liturgy in this book is that there's no reference made to where the material came from. I recognize a lot of it from my beloved Book of Common Prayer and a lot is straight out of the Bible, while other bits sound vaguely familiar. I've been to a lot of different kinds of churches and read a lot of liturgy, but I'm no expert so I can't pinpoint where it all came from. I wish there were a bunch of footnotes saying where all the material came from. That would be helpful in understanding what we're saying. Also, it's kind of difficult to appreciate another culture/tradition/time period's contribution when it's not even given credit. These people have clearly mined through so much material; I just wish I could have a map of where they've gone to get all of this. The Occasional Prayers section is pretty helpful. A lot of these are comparable to some of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer with a few notable ones that have no parallel prayer in the Book of Common Prayer. Two that really stood out to me are A Litany to Honor Women and Death of Someone Killed in the Neighborhood. I specifically like these two because these are things I've actually tried to pray about and felt unable to find the words. Scripted prayers provide words to pray when you don't know how to put words to your thoughts and feelings. In conclusion, I wish this book were more thoroughly annotated to provide a richer understanding of where the prayers come from, but aside from that I'm really liking it. As far as the criticism made by a couple of my disgruntled fellow Anglicans that it's not The Book of Common Prayer, they're absolutely right, so if you're looking for that just buy that. It's a pretty sweet book too. It's definitely got the leanings of the New Monastics. It's got their subversive pacifist fingerprints all over it (and I like that). It's different from any prayer book you've seen and hopefully will make everyone feel a little bit welcome and a little bit displaced, which is good because we've got a lot to learn from trying out other folks' ways of doing things.I'm sure I'll find more I like and dislike about it as the year goes on and this review is certainly not my final take on it, but hopefully some of you can benefit from my thoughts from the first few readings.Grace and Peace to all of you.

This book, which comes out of "new monasticism," in which people live in households under a common Christian discipline but do not take lifetime vows, is a very thoughtfully constructed form for daily communal prayer or, in my case, daily individual prayer. It has a clear social justice/holiness perspective but highlights Christian thinks from all centuries. The daily scripture readings are substantial but not overly long. It is a blessing to me.

This is the best of the best. There’s nothing else quite like it. It is not too long for working parents. It has many songs from different traditions (see their app for sound clips). It has some unconventional additions that you wouldn’t find in traditional liturgies. It’s new! Chrysostom was a gifted saint, but there is much to draw from today that he did not have, and this book makes use of the gifts of all those generations since him.

This resource is accessible to those of liturgical traditions, non-liturgical traditions, and even those with no tradition. A songbook in the back keeps you from having to lug around a hymnal if you don't want to and the inclusion of chord names over the lead lines provides for a wide range of instrumentation. Use this for your own devotion or with others - either way, you'll be enriched by the perspectives.

This has become my everyday devotional. Some have complain of the repetitive nature but, that is what liturgy is. There is comfort in liturgy. As far as the book itself, it is extremely easy to use. Many prayer books require you flip pages at different times during a daily devotion. This one is laid out that you don't have to (except for a song). I highly recommend it.

My husband and I use this Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals every morning. We actually like using it with the Audible version to hear the songs and Shane Claiburn prayers and commentary.

I'm a newbie to books of Prayer but I love this book - Don't consistently read it but when I get to it during periods of my life (months/weeks), it is so so so helpful in refocusing myself on what is most important to me. This book of common prayer is refreshing in its orientation around social action (as opposed to the exclusive application of religion to the 'spiritual' realm as most devotionals tend to do). I particularly appreciate the historical sketches in the morning pieces -- very inspirational and thoughtful bits. Thanks!!!I would agree with others that the kindle version can be a bit cumbersome to navigate vs. a paper version (I only have kindle). However, the convenience of having it on multiple devices is worth it to me.

So many people think gay history, with a few minor exceptions, began only when the Stonewall Riots occurred in 1969, but this is far from the case. In his book Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World 1890-1940, George Chauncey puts any such beliefs aside. He sets out to disprove three myths: the myth of invisibility, the myth of isolation, and the myth of internalization. The myth of invisibility holds that the gay world prior to Stonewall was invisible and largely inaccessible. Chauncey shows that this was not the case as a vibrant culture around homosexuality was visible throughout the period he studied. He notes that even though his study is limited to New York City, similar advances were occurring in other major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. The myth of isolation is similar to the myth of invisibility in that it holds there was no gay culture to speak of, no gay-friendly places to hang out, no places where gay business was welcomed. Chauncey demolishes this myth as handily as he demolishes the myth of invisibility. Finally, the myth of internalization holds that the gay and lesbian populations had internalized the messages of hate and shame promulgated by dominant culture, and therefore no move was made to establish a specifically gay culture. Chauncey blows this myth, too, out of the water. Gay people were subject to constant police harassment, but they nevertheless proudly, even exuberantly expressed their sexuality.Although New York City is the focus of the book, the text is far more wide-ranging. New York is the appropriate place for centering this story as it pertains to the US because it was not until the 1960s that San Francisco came to be known as a gay Mecca. Even today New York is a leading destination for those who wish to come out of the closet, but are unable to do so in their provincial home towns. Nevertheless, New York is not the entire story, and Chauncey brings in other details as appropriate. The book is full of facts and statistics, and this attention to detail sometimes makes the book a little dry. It is all very interesting and fascinating reading, however, just occasionally overly pedantic. Still, I highly recommend this book especially for the queer person who wishes to learn more about gay history. The text fills in important gaps about understanding of gay history, and superbly corrects commonly held misconceptions.

In "Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890 – 1940", George Chauncey argues “that gay life in New York was less tolerated, less visible to outsiders, and more rigidly segregated in the second third of the century than the first, and that the very severity of the postwar reaction has tended to blind us to the relative tolerance of the prewar years.” (pg. 9) Further, he argues “that in important respects the hetero-homosexual binarism, the sexual regime now hegemonic in American culture, is a stunningly recent creation.” (pg. 13) Through his work, Chauncey maps both the physical and social topography of gay culture in New York City. Finally, Chauncey argues “that the construction of male homosexual identities can be understood only in the context of the broader social organization and representation of gender, that relations among men were construed in gendered terms, and that the policing of gay men was part of a more general policing of the gender order.” (pg. 28)One of the most interesting parts of Chauncey’s analysis details the manner in which gay and heterosexual men interacted. Chauncey writes, “The earlier culture [pre-1950s] permitted men to engage in sexual relations with other men, often on a regular basis, without requiring them to regard themselves – or to be regarded by others – as gay.” (pg. 65) Due to this, “many men alternated between male and female sexual partners without believing that interest in one precluded interest in the other, or that their occasional recourse to male sexual partners, in particular, indicated an abnormal, ‘homosexual,’ or even ‘bisexual’ disposition, for they neither understood nor organized their sexual practices along a hetero-homosexual axis.” (pg. 65) Chauncey adds an element of class to his analysis, specifically when discussing the differences between those groups of gay men that self-identified as queer and those that identified as fairies. Chauncey writes, “The queers’ antagonism toward the fairies was in large part a class antagonism. Not all queers were middle class…just as not all fairies were of the working class. But if the fairy as a cultural ‘type’ was rooted in the working-class culture of the Bowery…the queer was rooted in the middle-class culture of the Village and the prosperous sections of Harlem and Times Square.” (pg. 106) His discussion of police power further demonstrates the complex relationships between the queer and normal worlds.Chauncey discusses the anti-vice societies’ and police focus on sexuality targeting primarily female prostitutes. Chauncey writes, “The campaigns to control assignation hotels illustrate the degree to which the anti-vice societies often neglected homosexuality because of their preoccupation with controlling female prostitution, as well as the ability of ‘normal’-looking gay men to manipulate observers’ presumption that they were straight to their own advantage.” (pg. 163) When the police did charge gay men, they usually did so with disorderly conduct charges. Chauncey writes, “The use of the disorderly conduct law against gay people was consistent with the intent of the law, which effectively criminalized a wide range of non-normative behavior in public spaces, as defined by the dominant culture, be it loitering, gambling, failure to hire oneself out to an employer, failure to remain sober, or behaving in a public space in any other manner perceived as threatening the social order.” (pg. 172) After the end of Prohibition, the State Liquor Authority controlled both those spaces where patrons could drink and what type of clientele they could host. According to Chauncey, “The genius of the licensing mechanism lay in the way it expanded the state’s ability to survey and regulate public sociability…By threatening proprietors with the revocation of their licenses if its agents discovered that customers were violating the regulations, it forced proprietors to uphold those regulations on behalf of the state.” (pg. 336) This public role of policing fed into later Cold War fears, in which “the specter of the invisible homosexual, like that of the invisible communist, haunted Cold War America. The new image was invoked to justify a new wave of assaults on gay men in the postwar decade.” (pg. 360) This effectively ended the broader public realm open to gay New Yorkers while cementing the hetero-homosexual binary.

At the risk of aging myself, it's been quite a few years since I've used SAS or SPSS. Once upon a time I'd probably fall under the category of advanced user especially during phd studies but over time, used it less and less. Although the fundamentals remain the same, the specifics look different which is where this comes in....nice quick refresh. Easy to follow, clear and concise. Solid refresh or general go to for new users.

Dr. Aldrich has made my life easier. This text on SPSS really nails everything I needed to know when working with SPSS. It is thorough, comprehensive, well-organized and extremely efficient in presenting the material. Well done!

Having enjoyed the first two books in this series, I was eager to pick up the third book, Detention of Doom. The book was fun as were the first two, although I found myself a bit confused in places. I guess that's not too surprising in a book where the sometimes seems unfinished. But in a superhero book with a lot of fantasy elements the strange and the confusing is to be expected. Bruce Wayne was once again the most entertaining of the group, with Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) a close second. Bruce's serious, dark personality shines through, sometimes in rather amusing ways. I enjoyed reading about how Bruce's skills helped save the day when the others lost their superpowers in the Phantom Zone. The role of Bizarro was more important than I thought it would be. A fun series for young superhero fanatics.

I'm loving this book series. The author does a great job of weaving comic book elements into a fun new story for young and old readers alike. And Dustin Nguyen's art complements the writing perfectly. This book was such a fun read, Bruce and Barry had me laughing out loud throughout. As a DC comics fan and a teacher, I love recommending these books to my students, especially those reluctant readers. The unique format, familiar characters, and fun fast-paced plots keep them engaged and coming back for more!

I bought all three books in this series based on the Amazon reviews (a 4th book comes out soon). I got a very excited “thank you” phone call from my granddaughter after she finished her books. Wonderful job DC Comics!

My batman obsessed son loves to read about his favorite character in this young reader series. I love the challenge it provides him to strengthen his reading ability.

This book is awesome for a wide range of kids! It's enjoyable and funny but has serious and almost romantic qualities. I recommend this book for kids 8-13 and to all DC fans alike!

I read this with both of my 10 year old daughters. We all loved it. It’s a great, funny story. I really liked how they tied this into the “main” D.C. continuity. All of these kids were very much in character.

My 8 1/2 year old son loves this series. It keeps him engaged and off his iPad. No other books have done this for him. The writing and illustrations are clever and speak to this generation of kids.

Just good old DC silliness by another author. Good stuff too. Love Alfred.
