enjoyed the book, got some good information about how to use a check list and the value it could bring. My only negative comment is that once he made his case he just kept repeating things.

Meh. The book is WAY over-hyped!! It spends MOST of its long never-ending pages explaining medical scenarios. It's unbelievable....I felt as if I was studying my Paramedic book again! All that nonsense to get to "Checklists are good...you should develop one for everything you do". That's it folks...I just gave you the cliff Notes for the ENTIRE book! Even the sample checklists (all two of them) they illustrate are a joke.Pay ME whatever this book costs, and I'll actually MAKE a checklist for you! Tell ya what...contact me if you want the book. I'll give it to you if you just pay shipping. Very disappointing!

Despite our vast knowledge in virtually every area of life, Gawande believes we are still deeply prone to failure. He believes many such failures could be overcome (and, conversely, much success obtained) through a simple but often ignored tool, the checklist. He writes:That means we need a different strategy for overcoming failure, one that builds on experience and takes advantage of the inevitable human inadequacies. And there is such a strategy though it will seem almost ridiculous in its simplicity, maybe even crazy to those of us who have spent years carefully developing ever more advanced skills and technologies. It is a checklist (p. 13).Gawande supports his conviction through the use of interesting, true accounts drawn from several areas: medicine (chapters 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8), aviation (chapter 6 and pp. 32-34, 173-182), construction (chapter 3), national disasters (chapter 4), factories (chapter 6), and investments (chapter 8).The author believes that we normally do not look for patterns in our failures but we should, and the simple checklist could serve as our guide (p. 185). I, personally, have always made use of checklists, finding them a valuable means to keep me on task and remind me of what needs to be done. But The Checklist Manifesto has challenged me to step up my game, especially in my supervision of others and in accomplishing long term and/or complex goals. I think most everyone would benefit from reading this well-written, interesting, and helpful book.Reviewed by Gary E. Gilley, Pastor-teacher, Southern View Chapel

Loaded with anecdotes with little scientific backing. Not much to get out of this book other than "checklists can be useful for some situations." If the author ever chooses to write an update, I hope he adds some how-to info and includes such items as criteria for making a good checklist, best practices for checklist structuring and development, etc.

I had to read this book for work, and I wasn't looking forward to it. To my surprise it has a very good narrative is quite readable. The examples used are compelling and keep the pages turning. By the end it had me thinking of our processes and I have my team scouring them looking for places where a checklist would be appropriate. If you're concerned about quality, you should give this book a try.

I bought this for my niece who is a nurse, after my brother's hospital experience was unsatisfactory. Knowledge, history, and status weren't shared by the staff and there was no mechanism for tracking details, like the fact that he was diabetic though recovering from a surgery (related to the diabetes). There were bad estimates of his pain level from the staff not knowing he had had two strokes. And he got a terrible bed sore. My niece works in a different hospital where she described her reputation for documenting everything meticulously. I thought I would give her some further support for this practice. Gawande is the go-to guy for all things medical, and especially for wisdom related to medical and hospital practice. He has data, narratives, and is authoritative. Many errors and hospital acquired complications can be avoided with checklists that keep everyone on all shift on the same page. They are more detailed than normal white board status reports. I noted that a hospital near me, when I went for a diagnostic test, seemed to use the practice. Every new person who entered the room asked my name and what I was there for. While repetitive, it eliminates the possibility of the wrong procedure happening to someone. I also recommend Jerome Groopman for other medical practice wisdom.

I suppose you could order the abbreviated summary version of the book to get the main idea and you might already suspect that the main idea is that checklists are the way to get things right. I must say, however, that the main idea is just the destination and understanding how Atul arrived at this simple and perhaps obvious result is just as important in driving the point home. I am only three chapters in and the point has been made but the supporting evidence around how and why checklists are the way has been profoundly moving.

Very interesting exploration of the benefits of using checklists in various industries (but mainly in operating theaters in hospital) to facilitate consistency which leads to improvements in many areas : productivity, safety, profitability to name but a few. The author is a highly experienced surgeon who saw the advantages of introducing checklists to radically improve patient safety during operations and in recovery. What I found shocking from reading this book was the sheer number of mistakes that are routinely made in operating theaters around the world which lead to poor recovery rates and even death in some cases. The benefit of introducing checklists into theater was enforcement of policy that all staff during an op were now "singing off the same hymn sheet". The book alludes to this idea repeatedly. The book was very readable my only gripe was I'd have liked to have seen an example of the checklists that the author referred to.

If we were to advise someone to live an idle life we would most probably be met with a strange, if not a comical, look. Hard work and a disciplined life has been so ingrained in our minds it is difficult to imagine living in a different mode. We have been trained to get up early, rush to work, do a meticulous job, finish quickly and drive back home through mad traffic, seeking peace and quietude. It is hectic, but we have been used to it. The author of this book, Mr Hodgkinson, wants us to reverse this pattern and to go back to our old, relaxed and leisurely life, i.e. before the car and the telephone. That was when we worked at our own pace, had long lunch breaks, took a nap in the afternoon and played with the children out in the fresh, uncontaminated atmosphere. People in farming, herding, weaving, mending ...did not understand what work anxiety was about. When exactly did we switch to our modern, hectic lifestyle? Sociologists differ, but most agree on industrialisation being the main culprit. When machines arrived and mass production started in 17th century, the world took a turn and with it just about everything changed. In one sense, it was a blessing. People were now guaranteed a steady income at the end of the month; products became more available and amenities more affordable and enjoyable. At the beginning there was excitement and all looked well. But with time, life was becoming more stressful and tedious, and anxiety levels shot up. Working 10-12 hours a day at a factory 6-7 days a week was strenuous, if not exhausting. People's leisure time disappeared and fatigue set in. Employer's pressure to produce more was relentless. In fact workers started to realise that, sadly, they were being owned and enslaved by their companies. Employers started a psychological campaign to uplift morals using expressions like; Work is heathy, idleness is for the lazy; hard work brings health, wealth and wisdom, and so on. But the few intellectuals. who refused to be enslaved, realised what was going on: it was all a selfish effort to increase the wealth of the few, rich owners. So, how does the author suggest we get over this ingrained philosophy of hard work intended only to enrich the capitalists in our society? "It's time to say No to jobs and Yes to fun, freedom and pleasure. It's time to be idle " says the author. Taking all this seriously, he established the Idler Magazine to help people start their idle life. He launched a comprehensive effort to romanticise the good old days before industrialisation. Why be a slave to a schedule we did not choose? Why rush in the morning? Rising early is unnatural. "No! early risers are not healthy, wealthy and wise - they are often sickly, poor and stupid" . The best ideas have come from idle people and not from those hampered by excessive routines. And, look at our eating habits: long gone is the leisurely lunch with wine and good friends; see now how it has been reduced to a dry sandwich eaten alone, in order to rush back to work.. What about our afternoon nap - our "inalienable right" which has been taken from us by the agents of industry. Winston Churchill and Thomas Edison, to mention only two great men, took a nap every day! The author bemoans too, the death of the afternoon tea, a calming ritual which to many was absolutely sacrosanct. After all it was the drink of poets and philosophers. It was mostly abandoned - it retarded production. What are we to make of all this? Should we go ahead and join the Idlers? Or, is our modern life, hectic as it is, more beneficial and, at least, ensures our financial security? We obviously need a compromise, one that will ensure our security as well as provide us with the peace of mind and the will to bring back the fun and joy of the old idle days.Fuad R QubeinFeb., 2017

Everyone who is too busy at times needs to read this book, just as a way of NOT feeling guilty for taking things down a few notches when and if they need to. Well written and witty, I thoroughly enjoyed it and unlike my other kindle books which I usually remove from my device after completing, I'm keeping this one around to remind me to take things more easy and be a little kinder to myself. You may not agree with all sections of the book (such as recommending staying up late or sleeping in until late morning, neither of which I do) but you will find things that resonate with you. At least I did. Fantastic section about how the Industrial Revolution stole our free time from us and, combined with the Puritan Work Ethic, helped turn us into the stress and overwork monsters we are today.

Being an idler is not that easy. It requires letting go of the need for security and achievement and lots of other things we think we need to get by. Just being receptive and letting the world spin on its own. A lot of people just can't handle the stillness. It's ironic, but an idler can actually get a lot accomplished. Taoism--the Asian traditions have a lot to say about that. In Japanese art, the concept of negative space--leaving parts of the canvas empty so that the viewer can rest--is important. In the Bible, Jesus spoke to Martha and Mary about stopping the constant busyness. It seems like the Old Testament encourages people to work really hard--especially the Proverbs--but the New Testament is more about laying your burdens down.

Being a 20 something now, the thing you hear most often is "get a job". That was easy enough in my grandfather's day; work your way up the corporate ladder, pop out some kids, work a little more, get a good pension, feel some good old-fashioned pride. Things were good. Now it's like, work for 8-10 hours, pop in a microwaved meal, think about paying off some student loan debt, stare at the computer, get 4 hours of sleep and do it all the next day. How To Be Idle is exactly what it sounds like: it's a run through of a possible alternative to the work 'til you drop ideology. For starters, the idea that a person doesn't have to wake up by 8 o'clock to be productive could be an eye opening concept for some. Think of how much time you waste just 'thinking' about doing work. Could it be that your procrastination is actually helping you in the long run? Thinking of procrastination as strategy that could propel ones work is a strange and yet perfect idea. When you're ready to work, you'll know it. How is it a good idea to drink an extra large coffee, that gives you the shakes and gut rot and only the illusion of productivity. Fear not- Idling doesn't mean sitting around like a new age bum, although that would be perfectly acceptable should you choose that option. It means taking control of your day, and not letting work (especially the bureaucratic busy work) run your life. Take time to drink a cup of tea. It's ritualistic and more conscious than a gallon of coffee. We learned this already, slow and steady wins the race,I read this in Florida visiting my grandparents and they, and all the other seniors by the pool seemed to look at the cover as some sort of communist manifesto. I think for them, working was a profitable, well respected and attainable prospect. It seems today that the precarity of existing in a society that constantly puts up obstacles, leaving a person in a constant state of anxiety makes any alternative of thinking a helpful or even life saving option. If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, this is really the book. Sleep in, have a cup of tea, a smoke, sex, drink, and a good conversation all while getting your work done. Imagine that.

This book to me; brings forth the idea that you don't need alot of things to get you excited by life. The simpler things i.e. a good book, some music, loved ones and friends can enrich your life, more than things. A balm to Consumerism and a great read:)

I enjoyed this as I've been researching Cricut ,+Silhouette. I'm glad I bought this before I made my decision. A few things I don't understand but quite a bit I do 're using the software now that I've seen screen shots. It reminds me of a digitizing/machine embroidery/photo editing program so I think ill pick it up fast. Now if someone would write a tutorial project ebook that would be fantastic for newbies like me. I would be a customer.

This book is OK. Doesn't give much more information than the Cameo 3 manual. It doesn't walk you through any projects to help you learn how things work in making your project. I've learned more from watching YouTube videos.

This book has been the best thing for me to learn what the Silhouette can do! It is written in easy to understand language with lots of photos. I am still learning something every time I use it. It is a great reference book!

This is a helpful guide. I needed something that I could read separate from my computer while using my Cameo. I do not learn very well when I have instructions on the computer while using the computer at the same time. This guide was perfect for me, since it was on my Kindle.

Buying my Silhouette machine is a love/hate, hate/love relationship! I have had trouble with this machine as the included manual doesn't really explain how to use it! So I went searching for something to help me and found this guide! While I wish now that I had bought the new Cricut machine, this guide has helped me with what I am stuck with for now. I like how the author wrote out what does what. He makes it very easy to understand the different parts of what you can do.I think that his tutorials are the best tho. When you download any item off the the Silhouette website you only get the image, not the instructions! So his tutorials really help. I wish that he wrote more... but I think that that is just the way it will be with this machine! But I am thankful for his help!

I have found other resources which are more thorough than this guide and easier to follow, as well.

Great reference. Easy to read and very helpful.

Well written, especial if you are new to the cameo, and with the new update version 3 software I personally can understand the software much better. Thank you Ms. Hudson for thinking of all the newbies to the cameo!!

The Agony House, by Cherie Priest

Review

Advance Praise for The Agony House:* "Priest pairs with O'Connor to neatly weave together the history of comic books and contemporary concerns about gentrification into an eerie ghost story set in a ramshackle house that's as much a character as the people living in it.... Priest does a great job of skillfully including the important conversations Denise and her family have with their new community. At its heart, though, this is a ghost story, and Priest excels at building palpable atmosphere: Denise's parents' anxiety about their shoestring budget, the sweltering New Orleans summer heat, the disrepair of the house ("soggy plaster fell from the studs like wet cake"), and the increasingly terrifying haunting. Dynamic characters and a surprising mystery round out this sharp, satisfying, and engrossingly spooky story." -- Booklist, starred review"Priest ably weaves contemporary issues and a feminist strand into this fantasy as, while briskly fending off ghostly visitations and searching out clues to the house's violent past, Denise makes new friends and encounters pushback from some St. Roch neighbors rightfully leery of white gentrifiers. Highlighted by a wonderfully melodramatic climax, the author brings her plotlines to upbeat resolutions with a thrilling discovery, a revelation about the comic's author, and a degree of general community acceptance of Denise and her family. Nearly every character's race, white or black, is carefully but unobtrusively specified. O'Connor inserts multiple pages from the comic and atmospheric stand-alone illustrations all printed in haint blue. Conflicts, ectoplasmic and otherwise, laid to rest in a deliciously creepy setting." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for I Am Princess X:A YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers*"Priest's YA debut is an engrossing cyberthriller packed with a puzzling mystery, crackerjack detective work, and an eerie, atmospheric sense of place. Teens who roll their eyes at adults out of touch with Internet culture will eat this up." -- Booklist, starred review*"An excellent book with loads of cross-genre and cross-format appeal. Highly recommended." -- School Library Journal, starred review*"Fresh and contemporary, this hybrid novel/comic packs a lot of plot in a relatively short book, but its strongest suit may be Priest's keen understanding of the chasmic gap between the way teens and adults engage in the landscape of the Internet." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

I loved the characters and the awkward situation Ms Priest put the main family in. This house project was sort of do-or-die, but everyone kept their heads up and dealt with ...haunting, ghosts, comic book?!? Great fun and action throughout!

Cherie Priest hits it out of the paranormal park again. With quiet sort of creepiness that end in you finishing the book in wee hours, she hooks with strong believable characters and a seemingly normal situation. Come for the BOO factor, but stay for the great storytelling.

I loved this ghost story so much! Great characters and a great story.

Very spooky book with excellent atmosphere.

This book was a mess, and I'm so sad my love of spooky got me here. I was ready for all the spooks and the ghosties, but instead I got a super boring book that had parts that made me uncomfortable. The premise of the novel is Denise, a girl from Texas, moves back to New Orleans after years of being away. She first left after Hurricane Katrina, which took away her dad and grandmother, and now she is back with her mother and stepfather to start over new. They move into a dilapidated house that is more than the average fixer and upper to create a bed and breakfast. Besides it being a mess, they soon realize they might not be along after mysterious voices, accidents, and more happen...especially after Denise uncovers a mysterious comic creator died in the house and Denise has found one of his old comics.👻 The first part of the novel that was meh for me was the storyline. It was super boring. I mean, I wanted to start skimming very early on. It was just a lot of lemme tell you everything I'm doing in this day to day happenings and be super meh about it. I was bored and just ready for the ghosties. When the ghosties did come, they really weren't very exciting. There were no chills to be had and there was no excitement. I didn't even fully get they were ghosties. The first occurrence of paranormal happenings was I think in the second chapter? Literally, Denise is exploring the attic, sees the door start to move, hears a scratch, and is like GHOSTS. ALL THE GHOSTS. GHOSTS GHOSTS GHOSTS AND MORE GHOSTS. Okay, this girl is all about the ghosties and probably those people on Ghost Hunters would have the same reaction but it was wildly jumped/reached and I was lost.👻 The art. I thought there would certainly be far more graphic content. That was one of the main reasons I picked it up. I love mixed media novels, and the art looked pretty good. The art that was in the novel was mostly in the chapter headers (that were all the same) and the comic. I mean, the art was good, but I just wanted more of it. The art was honestly the most enjoyable part of the novel. The art parts really that captivating either. I wanted to like the comic a lot, but it wasn't that great. It was just meh.👻 The characters. I didn't like any of them. If the character wasn't likeable, they were literally just there. I mean, there was nothing special about any of them. I felt no connection. I was severely not a fan of Denise, and the rest of them? So meh. The parents, Norman, Dominique, and...that one neighbor kid whose name I barely remember. Terry? I'mma call him Terry. I thought perhaps he would be entertaining because he just barged right into the house and was like gimme all your ghosts! But he was still boring and way too aggressive in this respect to be funny.👻 I wasn't a super fan of the writing either. It was in third person, so I think the disconnect with even stronger than it was had it been from Denise's POV.👻 Now, onto the parts that made me uncomfortable. There was a first part immediately made me uncomfortable but then I continued on and it got even worst. I read a lot of reviews for this book and a lot of people praised Priest's incorporation of gentrification and these instances, but honestly, I really didn't get it. I just felt turned off and uncomfortable with how it started and for me, I felt like this instance took away any good it did. All of the things I'm about to mention just happened in a few pages. So, Denise runs into this potential love interest Norman when he is delivering a pizza to her house. He mentions to her, hey, you're new and my age - a good place to hang out is this po'boy restaurant that is a good place to hang AND they have free wifi. The next day, Denise, is like yes! I'm going to go here.So she wanders in, realizes she has to pay to use wifi, so she gets some food. The author describes this entire process and than, at the very last sentence of the paragraph, this sentence is added in:"When she got her food, she picked a seat and tried not to feel weird about being the only white person who wasn't working behind the counter.".........What does that even mean? I intensely blinked at the book for a good long time, feeling incredibly uncomfortable but still I decided to move ahead because I was hoping to figure out what that meant.A few paragraphs later, Denise is just minding her business, on the computer, and some girls her age walk up to her and immediately start interrogating her. They want to know if she is the person that moved into the new house and the reasons behind it. They believe she is a gentrifier and has only moved into the area to fix up the house and upsell it so the neighborhood will have issues. They talk about how clear it is.This immediately makes Denise upset and she has to continuously how poor she is. I mean, there is literally a huge paragraph about her describing how poor she is and how they can't afford anything and doesn't this girl see her beat up laptop??? When that isn't enough, she has to talk about how she is actually from New Orleans and her daddy died in this city.Dominique, the ring leader, is like, "and i'm supposed to feel sorry for you?"So Denise is like, "Y'all don't want me here, and I don't want to be here, so there's something we agree on. Leave me alone, or keep giving me grief, I don't care. I've got headphones."And then randomly Dominique is like, "Why aren't you eating? You should be eating. Give me a dime so I get this girl some fries."And Denise is like, well, "So Dominique wasn't always awful to everybody, mostly just gentrifiers."??????? This entire scene clearly makes Denise out to be the victim and Dominique and her group out to be the villain. I mean, Dominique is clearly harshly investigating her and Denise is having to defend herself/mention she is a victim in this situation. Plus, instead of dealing with this and asking Dominique why she feels this way, Denise instead just completely dismisses her. And I still don't even get the french fries thing???? Again, it was incredibly uncomfortable period, but especially after the above statement that put it all into context. When talking with Sha about this, she found it quite apt that this was entitled Agony House. The worst part was this exchange that was the worst part in my opinion.Denise's stepdad comes to pick her up and Denise pops into the car. They exchange a few words and then this appears:Denise: "You want me to ride a bike in this heat? Through this neighborhood?"Stepdad: "The heat, I'll give you. But don't crap on the neighborhood. Don't be one of those white kids who's weird about being around black kids."Denise: "I'm not. I'm trying not to, and...that's not what I meant. I've...I've got black friends in Houston. Kim's black." She knew it sounded dumb even before it left her mouth, but there it was. "But that's not the problem, I don't think. Well, I don't know, maybe that's part of it. The point is, I don't have any new friends."...I don't even know where to begin to unpack all of things uncomfortable and wrong in this statement. I don't even remember a Kim being mentioned before this moment, and just because you know/have black friends doesn't not equal you to have racial issues. And you don't think that the problem?? Maybe it's part of it??? I can't even.Maybe there was a full arc for this (idk, I did major skimming for the rest of the book but there were parts that I was 200% done after this point that I did end up giving up a little past halfway through even in my skimming so I'm not entirely sure) that would topic important issues in race and gentrification, but I believe this beginning part isn't the way to do it at all. This was just a messy read for me, and this review is long enough. Don't recommend at all. 1 crown and a Merida rating.

I have read a number of books by Priest and they are always interesting reads even though I am not a huge fan of her writing style. When I saw this book was a blend of traditional novel and graphic novel I had to pick it up because I love that sort of thing. This ended up being a decent read involving a haunted house, ghosts, and a teen trying to fit into a new neighborhood.Denise and her family have just moved back to New Orleans and purchased a huge decrepit house that Denise’s mom wants to turn into a B&B. Unfortunately money is tight and things keep going wrong, it’s almost like the house is out to kill them. Then when Denise and her family start hearing and seeing strange things it really gets out of control. Denise wonders if everything that is happening ties into a mysterious graphic novel that she found in the attic of the house. This is a well done ghost mystery sort of story. I enjoyed the setting of a New Orleans that is trying to recover from the aftermath of Katrina. I also liked Denise and the other teens she meets in New Orleans. The story is a well done mystery and I enjoyed the role the graphic novel played in it.The book alternates between novel portions and graphic novel parts. The graphic novel parts are much less frequent and are directly from the mysterious graphic novel Denise and her friends find. While there isn’t anything super creative here, this was a fun and creepy diversion. For some reason it reminded me a bit of Chris Wooding’s “Malice” although the mystery was quite a bit different.Overall this was a good read. It’s a creepy haunted house story in an interesting setting. The mystery and the characters were engaging and well done. I would recommend to those who enjoy novel/graphic novel hybrids and like ghost stories.

I’ve taught bridge for about 15 years. This is now the book I teach from. It’s a better value than the ACBL series or the Audrey Grant series, both of which require multiple books in a series to cover the same material that Kantar covers in this one book. (I don’t teach the material in the order Kantar presents it because I find students want to learn bidding and play simultaneously, an approach that enables them to (sort of) play bridge as they are learning it.) One major drawback is that the book has no "test yourself" quizzes of the sort that are really essential to learning basic bridge (and are included in the ACBL and Audrey Grant books). I supply that deficiency in the courses I teach with quizzes I created. Some may be curious about changes in the fourth edition as compared to the third. They are extremely minor. Other than layout changes throughout and wording changes here and there, I noticed about 5 changes. They are:1. The choice of minor to open with 4-4 minors in a balanced hand out of range for notrump. The third edition recommends 1D for all such hands. The fourth recommends 1D for 4441 (unless the singleton is in diamonds, obviously), and the *better* minor for 4432 hands.2. There is now a suit-quality requirement for a positive response to a 2C opening. In the third edition the requirement was simply 7+HCP plus any 5-card or longer suit.3. In one place Kantar suggests that a 1NT response to a 1C opening shows 8-10 HCP, but the main section on responses to 1C preserves the 6-10 range of the third edition.4. Kantar now includes criteria for opening 1 of a major rather than 1NT with a 15-17 HCP 5332.5. Kantar explains leading K from AK doubleton.(One new oddity in the fourth edition: In addition to its normal copyright notice on the verso of the book’s title page, the publisher adds a copyright notice after each hand or deal diagram. Why?)

Early impression, as I have only read 25% of the book so far! The trouble with most Bridge books and online guides is that they tell you what to do without giving any reason why. I had hoped a Dummies book would explain why, and not expect me to figure it out for myself. Certainly, some explanations are given in this book. But, far too often, the standard "just trust me" advice is presented. Maybe I'm dumber than most dummies, but I'm totally lost on the concept of "extra winners." For some reason, discarding from other suits is far preferable to playing a useless card from the suit led??? In Chapter 7, advice is given to establish a side suit before pulling trumps. In most cases, I find that dangerous, but the reasoning for establishing a side suit first is never discussed (maybe later?). Getting best advantage from a 5 or 6 card side suit is discussed, and it is declared without explanation that this only works if it's in the dummy. I could use some more explanation if I am ever to be a creative and intelligent player, instead of a recipe memoriser.

I joined a Bridge Club after not playing for 25+ years. I taught Beginner Bridge in years past but remembered almost nothing...this book got me back to speed in a few hours. I enjoy playing...and can honestly say this book is money well spent.

I have started a number of beginning bridge books only to have to wade through pages and pages about bidding. This book was different. It did an excellent job of teaching card play and bidding. When I get a book to learn how to improve at a game I don't want to have to finish the whole book before I can apply anything that I have read. With this book you can read some and use what you have learned right away. I wish I had found this book first.

A very comprehensive book for beginners. Well-written but far from succinct. Lots of humor and personal accounts that include big names like Jacoby and Stayman. The biggest problem is that it provides so much information but no real summaries at the end of each chapter to allow for testing your knowledge or for easier reference on rereads.

As a new beginner of Bridge I was finding it a bit daunting, however this book explains it in such basic terms without all the jargon it is much easier to absorb. Hopefully when I am more proficient I can then learn the terminology. Each longterm player I have talked with admits it is a hard game to learn because of all the facets, but with Bridge for dummies I am hoping that the journey will be made more simple.Thank you for your efficiency in getting this book to me in Australia.

We bought this for a friend who has never played bridge. I read it first, and I found it to be very well organized and logical.

Tons of information clearly written and best of all - a terrific sense of humor. My wife and I had many a laugh! We keep this book at handy while we practice.

In the business world classifications are created with little regard to their logic, coherence or usability. These classification schemes are used in ERP systems for configuration, in databases for searching and selection and reference data throughout systems and applications. This book provides a good overview of taxonomy principles and is a good book to read, but when trying to manage taxonomies in the business world, various human factors impact taxonomy design and management. Typically taxonomy design is left to IT who lack the training and skills. They are directed by various departments to create classifications and use terms that only a small group of people understand and even they create ambiguous, duplicative, overlapping and frequently incoherent taxonomies. With the increasing proliferation of data and our dependencies on data, we need some practical tools and techniques for business organizations to use when designing taxonomies. For example how to select facets and validate facets. This book does not provide this. Those creating taxonomies lack Data Literacy and as a result we continue to create code lists, reference data and classifications that are random, temporal and biased.

This very readable book starts with a nice story of how the author became a taxonomist, and then dives right in to the technical details. Well, not too deep - but certainly deep enough for aspiring taxonomists to get a great overview of the skills and techniques required to build, maintain and apply good taxonomies. The Accidental Taxonomist contains life lessons and practical advice about taxonomies, ontologies, vocabularies, entities, relationships and all manner of other semantic tools. The thing about taxonomies is that they really are simple for humans to understand. We all think in terms of hierarchies of knowledge whether we are conscious of it or not. The human cerebral cortex is even organized physically as a hierarchy of layers. Along with pattern matching and the four F's - feeding, fighting, fleeing and reproduction - implicit taxonomies inform how we perceive just about every object and concept around us.This book makes these concepts accessible as either a primer or a refresher for seasoned readers. As CEO of a company that makes taxonomy software (not featured in this edition of the book, lest you smell some astroturf), I can tell you that it really represents much of our philosophy of the best way to use taxonomies in the enterprise.

If you have to create a taxonomy (a controlled, hierarchival vocabulary) for your business, you MUST read this book. It is thorough but extremely pragmatic, and that is its main value. It doesn't require the reader to have a master's degree in library science, or to read the entire ANSI standard Z39.19, but it allows you to do taxonomy work quite effectively based on clear advice and example.

I am running a project to replatform and redevelop what started out as 30+ public-facing websites. We chose SharePoint, partly because we wanted our users to have greater control of their content and partly because we needed better built-in Search. Well, with Search comes taxonomy, and this was new to me. This book helped me understand the principals, and THIS in turn helped me to select an excellent consultant to help us with this effort and the book continues to be a great reference. If you have been presented with the task of "making Search work better", you could not ask for a better book.

I currently teach an online version of an information organization and representation course (knowledge and information management) for Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science and am using this book as an assigned text this semester (Summer 2011). This is an excellent resource for library science students and really helps provide a practical example in the classroom of how Librarians' skills can be used beyond the classroom. However, as a practicing information architect, I also keep a copy close at hand for professional use as well. There is not a plethora of resources such as this in the field and this text helps provide both a good overview as well as offering additional resources for practitioners and students alike. In a field where corporations are still struggling to manage both their information and knowledge, this book is not only a wonderful addition, but a necessity for IA's in the field.

Helps me as a reference tool at work.

This book is a great reference for anyone who is starting a taxonomy, modifying one, or maintaining one.The history portion can be skimmed through if you're just looking for practical how-tos and best practices...but really, even the history portion will help you out in the long run.I'm an information architect, and keep this by my computer constantly.

I would recommend it to beginners and intermediate professionals trying to get their hands around the, sometimes very large task, of organizing your company's digital assets to facilitate searching and delivering the digital assets.
