From Booklist

O’Neal, part Native American, escaped into the army during the Vietnam War and quickly made a name for himself in the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols. For the next 40 years, he lived by and taught a growing and impressive range of combat skills, executed with weapons and with bare hands. Besides Vietnam, his wars included both Iraqi conflicts and covert operations in Nicaragua, the last ending with him taking personal vengeance for attacks on his family. He served with the Rangers and Special Forces and as an instructor of the combat techniques at which he became progressively more and more a master. During civilian interludes, he used his skills in a number of jobs, such as bouncer. Now fully retired, he still seems an unlikely candidate for work in a library, except for dealing with rowdies, vandals, and would-be bomb-throwers. --Roland Green

Review

“Military buffs will give this high marks; general readers may find it hard to relate to the author's relentlessly macho ethos, but they will find it hard not to admire his fierce dedication.” ―Kirkus Reviews“A vivid portrait of a man who not only loved combat but studied it closely and creatively.” ―Publishers Weekly“Like a primordial force from America's war-torn past comes Gary O'Neal. Good, bad, and ugly, his hero's tale is unmatched.” ―Weston Ochse, award-winning author of SEAL Team 666“As a fellow Vietnam vet, I found Gary O'Neal's story of service in the American military a riveting tale of blood and grime and death that is not only vivid but absolutely accurate. His readers will find themselves on the ground at O'Neal's shoulder as he battles in his own unique way America's enemies. No back off and call in the artillery kind of troop, O'Neal goes after the enemy with his bare hands and is more than willing to wade in blood to win. After Vietnam, O'Neal continued to fight not only the enemy but the entrenched officer corps of the U.S. Army to train new brigades of battle-ready soldiers. Highly recommended for not only the arm-chair soldier but all those who might find themselves on the modern battlefield.” ―Homer Hickam, author Rocket Boys (the basis of the film, October Sky), The Keeper's Son, The Far Reaches“A remarkable story of a man imbued with the Warrior spirit who carried it to heights few ever reach…He epitomizes the term, Rangers Lead the Way.” ―Robert Gilbert, Command Sargent Major“'Warrior Big O' Gary O'Neal, a Native American looked for his niche in life and found it in the United States Army Special Operations. This is a great story of a Native American who served his country with distinction and honor, and always continued the mission. I am proud to have him as my friend and brother in arms.” ―Glen E. Morrell, 7th Sergeant Major of the Army, Ret“Having spent more than 10 years in combat versus the enemies of the USA, I can think of no man alive that I would rather have on my Team than Gary Lee O'Neal. Gary O. does not seem to warm up to combat, unless he is bleeding about his own head and shoulders; then - the enemy is certain to die at the hands of Gary O. as he will simply 'twist' each of the enemy apart with his hands.” ―Billy Waugh SGM(R) - SOG Operations Vietnam 1962-1972“O'Neal's tales of his life and war experiences are graphic and stunning. He is a hard-core member of American's Special Forces warrior breed. Read this and know how the best of America's Army Rangers survive on the battlefields of Vietnam and the secret wars.” ―Eugene R Sullivan, Federal Judge, Vietnam Vet, Ranger Hall of Fame member, and author of Washington D.C. legal thrillers“Gary O'Neal is the man for whom the term ‘warrior' was invented, and his book is essential reading for everyone. Warning: once you start, you will not be able to stop until you've finished this remarkable work of a genuine American hero.” ―Colonel Jack Jacobs, Ret, Medal of Honor recipient, and author“Deep in the triple canopy jungles of Viet Nam, 1970, I witnessed the incredible feats of heroism of a young SP/4 Gary O'Neal, assigned to me as his 2nd Platoon Leader, Company C (Ranger), 75th Infantry (Airborne), for which he was awarded a Silver Star. His uncanny jungle prowess, absolute fearlessness, decisive actions and quick wit earned him respect, admiration and the love of the entire unit of Warrior LRP/Rangers. His book reveals how at a young age he developed and nurtured the inner Spirit that bred his Warrior nature. I am more than impressed with his array of accomplishments as a leader and instructor of America's finest warriors. The reader will be enthralled as his story is revealing and hard-hitting, running the full gamut of emotions from abject fear to unbridled heroism, from tender love to devastatingly pointed destruction. Among our unique Brotherhood of Warriors, I am proud to have served with the absolute best: American Warrior Gary O'Neal. This story should be required reading for every patriot and a guide for every young aspiring person who seeks to become one of the elite Special Operations Forces.” ―Gary Dolan, Esq., USMA 1969, Inductee Ranger Hall of Fame – 2011, author of Of Their Own Accord

Sorry, but I just can't believe half of anything in this book. I stopped reading about half way through because it felt like I needed to be wearing hop boys to wade through the bull. He claims he can twist a man's head off with a little effort. I'm not buying it.

I've read a number of Special Forces/Ops & 'Black Ops' books, most of which were good read's, then forwarded to my son who's now serving, but this one really "stands out"! It's one I keep asking if he's started yet--knowing he's busy and still one or two behind where I'd like him to be. I even encouraged my son to check into Mr. O'Neal's unique style of martial arts and survival training...Gary O'Neal truly captures the essence of his life's experiences and woven them into a captivating & gripping story. From a kid who never knew his Native American mother, but learned skills from his War Hero dad, coupled with the 'spirit' of his Indian mother, opened doors that few ever could. Who else could be driving his grandparents to church by12 years of age, in a car he essentially bought from a scrap yard where he turned some wrenches, slapped some gas, grease, and paint in & on it and drove around!? Who else could survive a number of close calls with death--not only in battle, but also while stateside--unless there was a calling?Who else? Except one who's been gifted and called to do what few qualify for? Then later tell the story in such a fascinating way that you find yourself wishing he'd write a follow-up. Hat's off to this legendary Ranger!

This book answered quite a few questions I had about M. Echanis. I knew he had died in Nicaragua but never knew anything else about him. Mr. O'Neal must be in good with someone because he has more lives than a cat. What a shame people like him don't run the military, instead we have a bunch of ladder climbers who panic over a paper cut. The contribution he has made as a soldier to this country can never be repaid. When you hear some old soldier say been there did that ask him if he knows this Ranger. Thank you for your contribution & service to our nation, hope there are more like you out there. I for one will sleep easier.

Great book, Gary O'neal is someone you certainly would NOT want as your enemy. However, I get the feeling if you met him out in public he would come across as a super nice guy...just don't tick him off, or make any sudden moves around him :-)I don't see how in the world men like this get along in society though. It has got to be super boring for them most of the time. Living on the edge all the time in combat has got to be a rush in it's on way. Day to day life out of combat would, to me, seem boring in a way. I hope he finds peace and happiness, he served this country well. I thank him for that.

An exciting story of the legendary Army Ranger Gary O'Neal from childhood through his military career. Full of special operations missions that helped shape Mr. O'Neal and that Mr. O'Neal used to shape others. Having had the opportunity to hear Mr. O'Neal speak at a charity event last year, reading this book brought forth a lot of insight as to how some of his mannerisms were shaped by his past. A stalwart man who has been dealt more than his fair share of hardships in life, overcoming them all to be inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame, this book is well worth a read.

I believe that this young man at a very early adult age did not really have a good to individual to be a good mentor that he could follow. As a very young man he joined the military. That gave him structure in his life. This he totally enjoys. This has given him individuals that help guide this man to do extreme physical and mental activities. The fact he has no one back home to help guide him. In the military he learns to follow individuals as a careerWhen he is discharged as a young man he finds strength in his family heritage and believes. His travels world wide as a young man gives him a advantage to be able to travel anywhere his skills were needed. His total military career that meets his mental and physical ego.It is a excellent book for those individuals to read. It gives a individual that has a type A individual who can possibly understand his own physical and mental capabilities..

This book is well written and interesting. It is a true story of half breed male American (part White and part Native American) who has a terrible childhood who grew up tough and had to steal an identity to join the military service to hide the fact of his underage. He is a warrior by heritage and finds his life and home in the military and fighting in wars. He hones his warrior skills and becomes a unique soldier. He also becomes a teacher to share his skills to make better soldiers. The military remains his home base and life. American wars wane and the true soldier warriors find other places in the world that need their skills. So this book is an interesting journey of this American Warrior in persecute of a home and wars to fight.

An astounding narrative that defies the ordinary ! O'Neaal's determination and faith in himself, in his training and dedication to his country exemplifies all that a true warrior needs to accomplish the impossible I. There are no limits to what can be accomplished when instilled with the spirit that O'Neal possessed! His story is truly one to be regarded as the primer for all warriors! Tate
